Geneseo Women's Basketball Falls to No. 6 Amherst, 58-46, in NCAA Tournament Second Round

AMHERST, Mass. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward McKenna Brooks finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds but the Knights could not topple sixth-ranked Amherst, falling, 58-46, at LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.


  • The Knights took a 2-0 lead when senior forward McKenna Brooksmade a pair of free throws, but Amherst answered with 10-straight points to take their largest lead of the period.
  • Geneseo battled back to tie the game with an 8-0 run, but trailed, 13-10, at the end of the quarter.
  • Poplawski opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game, but Amherst pulled ahead again, taking a 27-17 lead with 2:42 to play in the first half. Poplawski netted back-to-back threes to pull the Knights within four points, but Amherst drilled a triple before the buzzer, sending Geneseo into the break trailing, 30-23.
  • The Knights battled, staying within 13 points the entire second half, but could not overcome a stingy Amherst defense. Senior forward McKenna Brooks hit a pair of foul shots to cut the deficit to 51-43 with 5:45 to play, but Geneseo would draw no closer as the Mammoths earned the win.


  • Geneseo outrebounded Amherst, 36-34, but the Mammoths forced the Knights into 14 turnovers and blocked five shots. 
  • Senior forward McKenna Brooks finishes her four-year career ranked 10th in Geneseo history with 1,125 points, fifth with 764 rebounds, ninth with 182 steals and second with 119 blocks.
  • The Knights graduate seniors Kelsey PoplawskiMcKenna BrooksNicole Kaczmarczyk and Alyssa Lesakowski. The senior class finishes its career with a 108-18 mark, a SUNYAC Championship, four NCAA Tournament appearances and four NCAA Tournament victories, including a trip to the 2017 "Sweet 16"
