CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has released its women's lacrosse preseason coaches poll for the 2018 season. The Brockport Golden Eagles have been selected as the favorite to win this year's SUNYAC Championship. Edging Cortland out to take the top spot in the coaches poll by one point.
Last season, Brockport under the helm of Stephen Wagner had an outstanding season going 16-3 (8-0 SUNYAC) and winning the regular season title. The Golden Eagles lost to Cortland in the SUNYAC tournament final 12-7. Brockport received an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament where they made it all the way to the "Sweet 16" falling to Middlebury College, 14-7. Brockport will start their season February 24 vs. Denison.
The Cortland Red Dragons were voted second in the SUNYAC women's lacrosse preseason coaches poll. Under Head Coach Kelly Lickert-Orr, Cortland finished the 2017 season 14-4 (7-1 SUNYAC) winning the SUNYAC tournament title over top seed Brockport 12-7. The Red Dragons made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they lost to Messiah 14-13. The Red Dragons will open March 3 at home with Clarkson.
The Geneseo Knights finished third in the poll with 61 points. Last year, the Knights finished with a record of 9-9 (5-3 SUNYAC), eventually losing to Cortland in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals, 18-6. The Knights will get the season started on February 28 at home against William Smith.
