SUNYAC announces final 2016 spring athletes of the Week

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Quinn Danahy (SR), Fredonia
Position: LF
Hometown: Buffalo, N.Y.
High School: Bishop Timon

Needing a sweep to earn a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament, Danahy went 10 for 14 (.714) in a three-game sweep of Plattsburgh to lead Fredonia. He was 4 for 4 in a 4-1 win in Game 1. He went 2 for 4 then 4 for 6 on Saturday to complete the sweep. Overall, the Devils went 4-1 during the week, and Danahy was 13 for 24 (.542) with 10 RBI,7 runs, 2 doubles and a triple. He improved his overall average to .364.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Sam McCumiskey (JR) Brockport
Hometown: Belfast, N.Y.
High School: Fillmore Central

Sam McCumiskey shut down New Paltz in a crucial victory for Brockport to help the team secure the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. His victory was the sixth of the season for the young right hander. He tossed seven shutout innings during game two of Brockport's series with the Hawks. The shutout was Brockport's second straight. McCumiskey finished with more strikeouts and a lower amount of runners on base earning the nomination over his teammate Austin Spindler. McCumiskey finished the game with just four hits given up and one walk in comparison to four strikeouts.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Zach Hopps (SR), Cortland
Position: Attack
Hometown: Akwesasne, NY
High School: Massena

Hopps set one program-career record and tied a second as he helped lead the Red Dragons (11-5, 6-0 SUNYAC)to a pair of home conference wins last week. For the two games, Hopps totaled 13 points on nine goals and four assists and added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. With his 13 points, Hopps eclipsed the career-scoring mark of 271 points set by Mike Perkins from 1982-85. Hopps now has 272 points on 149 goals and 123 assists. He also tied the assist mark first set by Joe Adams from 1991-94. Hopps tallied three goals and one assist in a 19-6 win versus Geneseo and tied his career high with nine points on six goals and three assists in a 20-4 victory versus Oneonta on Saturday. For the season, Hopps leads Cortland in points (59), goals (39, assists (20) and shooting percentage (.419). 

MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Wyatt Russo (JR), Oswego
Hometown: Massapequa Park
High School: Massapequa

Russo set career performances in his two games this week, helping the Lakers turn in a 1-1 record. In Tuesday's win over Potsdam, the junior racked up a career-high 19 saves allowing just eight goals. He then bested that over the weekend against Plattsburgh, turning aside 20 Cardinal shots. Russo finished the week with a .686 save percentage in 120 minutes of play.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Esther Gabriel (SR), Oswego
Position: Attack
Hometown: Lancaster
High School: Lancaster

Gabriel led the team in goals over the two-game stretch, helping the Lakers secure two key SUNYAC wins. In Wednesday's 19-8 victory over Potsdam on Wednesday, the senior scored five goals, tying her career-high. Gabriel then repeated her impressive with another five-goal performance in the win over against the ninth-rank team in the country, Brockport. Over the two games, the Lancaster, N.Y. native also led the team in draw controls with 13 while also adding an assist and four groundballs

WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Angela Ponto (SO), Oswego
Position: Goalie
Hometown: Syracuse
High School: West Genesee

Ponto was a wall in net over the two games, helping the Lakers pick up two big conference wins en route to being named the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Championship. In Wednesday's victory over Potsdam, the sophomore collected eight saves on 16 Bear shots. She then bettered that in the 13-12 against #9 Brockport, when she turned aside 10 shots, including a denial of a Brockport attacker in the final two minutes of the game. Ponto led the team in ground balls over the week as well, scooping up an impressive 13.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK- Danni Napoli (FR), Geneseo
Position: Outfield
Hometown: Wading River, N.Y.
High School: Riverhead

Danni Napoli went 9-for- 16 (.563) with seven runs, three home runs and 10 RBI in five games in Geneseo's 4-1 week. In Game Two against Brockport on April 27, she went three-for- four, with two homers and four RBI. She followed that up with a four-for- six doubleheader against Buffalo St. on April 29 in which she scored four runs and five RBI, four of those on a Game Two grand-slam home run. Her performance over the week gave her the team lead in a number of offensive categories, including batting average (.422), home runs (7), runs (28) and RBI (21). She currently leads the SUNYAC in home runs and slugging percentage (.711) and is third in average and fifth in on-base percentage (.490).

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK- Sam Van Dorn (FR), Cortland
Hometown: Medford, N.Y.
High School: Patchogue-Medford

Van Dorn went 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA and one save in 13 innings over three appearances for the Red Dragons. She opened the week Tuesday by throwing a five-hit shutout in only her second collegiate start as Cortland defeated Nazareth, 3-0. She struck out six and walked one. Van Dorn earned a win in relief in a 9-7 victory Friday at Oneonta that clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title for Cortland, and the next day notched her fifth save of the season with two innings of two- hit shutout ball in a 6-3 win at New Paltz.

FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK- Alyssa Drapeau (SR), Oneonta
Position: Distance
Hometown: Glenville, NY
High School: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake

Drapeau broke the school record in the 10K at The Penn Relays this past Thursday. She took back the school record from teammate Mary Kate Bida set two weeks ago at Bucknell. She was the top Division III finisher and ninth overall with a time of 35:15.95. Her time moved her into the No. 2 spot of the Division III performance list in the event.

FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK- Kayla Clohessy (SO), Oneonta
Position: Jumps
Hometown: Pearl River, NY
High School: Pearl River

Clohessy broke the school record in the long jump this past Saturday at the Capital District Classic hosted by RPI. Clohessy added six inches to her school record that she set at the same facility earlier this month. Her new mark of 5.84 meters (19' 2") moved her up to the No. 3 spot in Division III.

MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK- Mitch Ryan (JR), Cortland
Hometown: Plattsburgh, N.Y.
High School: Seton Catholic

Ryan finished fourth overall, and was the top Division III runner, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays. He improved on his top ranking nationally in Division III with his time of 9:01.13. A total of 35 runners competed in the event, including 26 from Division I schools.

MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK- Nick Vachon (JR), Cortland 
Hometown: Johnson City, N.Y.
High School: Maine-Endwell

Vachon finished second in the high jump, behind a Division I athlete, at the Cornell Big Red Invitational with an ECAC- qualifying height of 2.10 meters (6' 10.75"). He is now tied for fourth nationally in the latest NCAA Division III rankings. Earlier in the week, he cleared 2.00 meters (6' 6.75") to win the high jump at the Ithaca College Tuesday Quad Meet.
