Buffalo State men's basketball senior team manager Marco Sola, a native of Puerto Rico who now has permanent residence in New York City, approached coach Fajri Ansari in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria distraught that he could not do anything to help. Sola's family back in Puerto Rico is still without electricity nearly three months later.
Sola and Ansari have been working together to try to help make a difference. They initially collected cases of bottled water and donated them to the Father Belle Community Center which was working with the City of Buffalo and the Connecticut Street Armory to ship the items to Puerto Rico. Due to the high cost of shipping items, Sola and Ansari explored other ways to help.
During the Bengals home games this past weekend, they successfully collected bags of donations including winter jackets, sweaters and boots as well as children's clothing and toys. These items were delivered this week to Catholic Charities which is working to help new families arriving from Puerto Rico into Western New York.
