Geneseo's Milkovich and Seren Earn Player and Coach Honors
FREDONIA - The State University of New York Athletic Conference has announced the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards for the 2010 field hockey season. The awards are voted on by the conference coaches.
Geneseo senior field hockey forward Michelle Milkovich (Vestal, NY/Vestal) has been selected as the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Player of the Year and third-year head coach Jessica Seren has been chosen as the league's Coach of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. Cortland's Erin Smith (Greene, NY/Greene) has been named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.
Milkovich is a four-time first-team all-conference selection and was named the Rookie of the Year in 2007 and becomes the first Geneseo player to earn Player of the Year accolades. The senior led Geneseo to its first SUNYAC championship, where she was named the tournament MVP. The Blue Knights (18-1) have won 17 straight games and earned a bid to NCAA Division III tournament for the first time. Milkovich has started all 19 games and leads the team with 15 goals, 13 assists and 43 points this season, all single-single school records. She was named the conference player of the week four times.
Seren earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year. Seren has guided her team to a school record 18 wins, its first conference title and a trip to the NCAA championship. The Knights earned its first national ranking on Nov. 1st at #20 and after the championship win have move up to #17. Geneseo defeated nationally-ranked Cortland for the first time ever on October 1st with a 2-1 overtime win. Geneseo repeated the feat in the SUNYAC Championship with a 1-0 win to improve its record against nationally ranked opponents to 3-1. The Blue Knights travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for a first round game at 3pm on Nov. 10.
Smith has played in 18 games, making 13 starts and registering three goals and one assist for Cortland as she earned a spot on the All-SUNYAC second team. She helped lead nationally-ranked No. 14 Cortland to a 15-4 overall record and an at-large berth into the national tournament. Cortland finished second in the conference standings with a 5-1 record and lost to Geneseo in the conference championship, but will making its 12th straight NCAA appearance.
