Geneseo Men's Basketball To Face Dickinson In NCAA Division III Tournament
GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo will take on Dickinson in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, as the 62-team field was announced Monday. The Knights (21-6) will be making their eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their first since 1999.
The College of Wooster (Ohio) will host the four-team regional on Friday (March 7) and take on St. Vincent (Pa.) in the pod's other first-round matchup. The two winners will advance to Saturday's second round game with a berth in the round-of-16 on the line.
The Knights received an at-large bid after playing in the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament. After clinching the third seed for the tournament, Geneseo defeated Oneonta, 79-67, before falling to Plattsburgh, 73-69, in the semifinals at Brockport on Saturday.
In its seven previous appearances, the Knights made it to the Sweet 16 on three occasions (1991, 1993, 1995), while also moving on to the second round in 1996. Geneseo also participated in the 1994 and 1998 big dances. In its most recent trip, the Knights lost to visiting Cortland, 71-61, in the first round of the 1999 tournament. Â
Three SUNYAC teams made the 2014 field, including Brockport and Plattsburgh. In addition to their two conference rivals, Geneseo also played two other teams this season that made it to the tournament. The Knights defeated Morrisville, 89-82, in the season-opener (Nov. 20) and also defeated Hobart, 82-73, in the consolation final of the Wendy's College Classic (Dec. 7).
