SUNYAC announces Men's Basketball annual honors
Cortland, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to recognize and award the 2016 men's basketball Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and the All-Conference teams. All awards were voted on by the SUNYAC men's basketball conference coaches.
Kyle Richardson (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin H.S.) from Plattsburgh was awarded Player of the Year. Jonathan Patron (Huntington, NY/Harborfields H.S.) from Plattsburgh was awarded Rookie of the Year, and Cortland's Tom Spanbauer was voted Coach of the Year.
Richardson was named the 2016 Player of the Year after leading the conference overall in rebounds with 258 and was third in scoring with a toal of 492 points. He is also tied second in the confernce in overall blocked shots (33), fourth in field goal percentage (.528), and eighth in steals (37). He was recognized twice this year as the SUNYAC Player of the Week as he helped lead his team to a first place regular-season finish.Â
Plattsburgh's Jonathan Patron was named the 2016 Rookie of the Year. Over 26 games he finished second overall in the conference in field goal percentage (.551), fourth in rebounding (189), 15th in scoring (369). As the top-ranked team in the East Region, the Cardinals earned an at-large bid into the 2016 NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament and will host the first round games and play Fitchburg State Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Spanbauer led the Red Dragons to their seventh league title, and first since 2013, and earned the league's NCAA Division III tournament automatic berth. In his 21st year as the men's basketball head coach at Cortland, Spanbauer earns SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time. Cortland is 20-7 overall and will face WPI at Amherst in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament Friday at 7:30 p.m.
