Cortland to Host Keuka in NCAA Men's Lax First Round Wednesday
The SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team will host Keuka College in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Div. III playoffs on Wednesday, May 7 at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time is to be announced.
The winner of Wednesday's game advances to the second round on Saturday, May 10, and will face either Springfield College or Western New England University at a site to be determined. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday, May 14 and the semifinals on Sunday, May 18. The Division III national championship game is Sunday, May 25, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
Cortland (15-3), under eighth-year head coach Steve Beville, is making its 14th straight NCAA tournament appearance and 30th overall, including 23 on the Division III level.
Keuka is one of three undefeated teams in the 30-team NCAA tournament field with a 14-0 record. The Storm earned their first-ever NCAA berth by winning the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament title with a 13-5 win over Morrisville State.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the national semifinals with wins over Aurora, 14-8, and Western New England, 12-7, before losing at home to RIT, 10-9 in overtime. Cortland has played in the national championship game five times since 2006 with four straight showings from 2006-09 as well as an appearance in 2012. Cortland won the 2006 national crown versus Salisbury and the 2009 title against Gettysburg. The Red Dragons lost to Salisbury in the national finals in 2007, 2008 and 2012.
Cortland earned an NCAA berth this season by winning its seventh straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title, 11-10 versus Plattsburgh, this past Saturday. The Red Dragons, ranked eighth nationally, opened the season with a 5-3 record but have won their last 10 games. Cortland's losses this year have been an overtime decision to 10th-ranked Lynchburg, a 9-8 loss at third-ranked and defending national champion Stevenson, and an 18-11 setback to top-ranked RIT.
