SUNYAC Announces Annual Softball Awards
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is pleased to announce its 2013 Softball annual awards as voted on by the conference coaches.
2013 Softball All-Conference Team
Lucia “Cheech” Meola has been named the 2013 SUNYAC Softball Player of the Year. Lucia led the conference batting .438. She started all 42 games for the Red Dragons this season. Meola had 35 runs, 57 hits, two homeruns, and 25 RBIs. Meola was named to the SUNYAC 2013 Softball All-Tournament team after leading the Red Dragons to their 12th SUNYAC title. Meola is a Cortland State senior from Liverpool, NY and attended Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Plattsburgh State's Ashley Marshall has been named the 2013 SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year. Marshall led the conference in with the lowest ERA, 1.78, and most wins, 21. Marshall held her opponents to 160 hits and 64 runs. Ashley was named to the SUNYAC 2013 Softball All-Tournament team. Marshall is a senior childhood education major at Plattsburgh State. Ashley is from Malone, NY and previously attended Franklin Academy.
Diane Cork has been selected as the 2013 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Cork, a SUNY Cortland freshman outfielder, was one of the most instrumental student-athletes in Cortland’s win over Geneseo in the SUNYAC Championship game. Cork had three runs and two RBIs in the 8-7 comeback win from a 7-0 deficit. Diane had the second most homeruns in the conference this season with seven. She was third in the conference with 38 runs scored. Cork secured the tenth best batting average in the conference, .371. Diane was recently named to SUNYAC’s All-Tournament team for her contributions that helped lead to a SUNYAC title. Cork is from Wayland, NY.
Casey Price has been named the 2013 SUNYC Sandra Hollander Softball Coach of the Year. Price just completed her third season as Oswego State’s head softball coach. Price previously served as a volunteer assistant pitching coach at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and Plattsburgh State. Prior to Price, the Lakers have not made it into the SUNYAC tournament since 2008. Under her leadership they advanced to the tournament the past two seasons. The 2013 season marked big improvements for the Lakers’ softball program. The Lakers, No. 6, defeated the top-seeded Brockport in the first round of the SUNYAC softball tournament, 9-0, in five innings. With that win, they nabbed their first post-season win in the SUNYAC softball tournament. Oswego achieved a record of 17-20 overall and a 9-9 conference record. Price coached Oswego to the fifth best batting average in the conference (0.285).
Casey Price also recently recruited one of the most promising freshmen in the conference. Oswego’s Tori Trovato is a leader in a variety of hitting categories. Trovato has the fourth best batting average in the conference(0.415), second best slugging percentage (0.678), and third in the runs batted in category with 35. Price also had one player on the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Oswego State’s Katie Bredin was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team after going twelve for twelve in fielding opportunities, and batting a .375 with .444 slugging percentage during Oswego’s three post season games. During Oswego’s upset win over Brockport Bredin had two RBIs and two runs scored. These successful student-athletes are a sign of Oswego’s growing program under the leadership of Price.
