Cortland Women's Soccer Defeats Springfield, 1-0, in NCAA First Round
GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomore Amanda Margolis (Oceanside) scored 11 minutes, nine seconds into the second half and the Cortland women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 win against Springfield College Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 12-4-5 on the season with the victory, giving head coach Heidi Woodcock her 100th career win at Cortland. Woodcock has posted a 100-60-24 record through her 10 seasons and is just the second coach in program history to reach the milestone.
Cortland advanced to face host and nationally eighth-ranked William Smith in the second round, Sunday at 1 p.m. The Herons defeated Penn St. Behrend, 3-0, in the first game of the day at Cozzens Field in Geneva. Springfield ended its season at 13-5-2.
Freshman Jessica McFadden (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) assisted on the goal for Cortland. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Hudson (Victor) made four saves in posting her seventh shutout of the season. Senior Erin Greenstein also stopped four shots for the Pride.
After a scoreless first half in which the Pride out shot the Red Dragons, 9-3, Margolis scored the game-winner in the 57th minute. McFadden sent a cross into the box from the right side, where Margolis collected the pass and deposited a shot into the left side of the goal for her fourth score of the season.
Springfield pressed for the tying goal, creating two chances in the final minutes. With just over seven minutes remaining in regulation, freshman Nicole Fowler sent a header just wide of the left post off a free-kick serve from junior Vicky DiNatale. Then, shortly after Greenstein made a save on a rebound shot by Cortland sophomore Rachel Parker (Marathon), Hudson denied a bid by freshman Krissy Cicalis in the 89th minute.
