Red Dragons Fall to Brandeis, 2-1, in NCAA Third Round; Tie for Ninth Nationally
ITHACA, N.Y. – Dara Spital scored two first-half goals as Brandeis defeated Cortland, 2-1, in the third round of the NCAA Div. III Women’s Soccer Tournament at Ithaca College. The Red Dragons finish the season with a 12-5-6 mark and tie for ninth nationally after tying for fifth place in 2011.
Brandeis (16-4-2) will play Misericordia (Pa.) in the national quarterfinals Sunday. Misericordia advanced past Ithaca in penalty kicks after playing the Bombers to a 0-0 tie.
Junior Kelly Knight (Rochester/Greece Olympia) scored for Cortland with 1:49 left in the game, off a pass from junior Matison Williams (Washingtonville), when her shot hit the crossbar and bounced in. The Red Dragons had a chance to tie the game with less than five seconds left, but a shot by sophomore Rachel Parker (Marathon) was saved by Brandeis goalie Michelle Savuto.
Cortland sophomore goalie Taylor Hudson (Victor) finished with four saves. Francine Kofinas started in goal for Brandeis and did not make any saves in the first half. Savuto registered four saves in the second half.
Spital gave the Judges a 1-0 lead in the game’s 13th minute when she collected a blocked ball and placed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. She tallied again in the 25th minute when she headed in a pass from Mary Shimko over Hudson’s reach.
