Plattsburgh women's soccer goes the extra mile
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With the beginning of the 2015 season upon us, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team has taken to the advantage of creating several charity event games throughout the year.
The Cardinals will host a cystic fibrosis fundraiser for the second-straight season against SUNYAC rival Oneonta on Saturday, October 10. All proceeds will be donated to cystic fibrosis research. In their first year the team raised several hundred dollars in research money and are looking to improve on that mark.
In addition to the cystic fibrosis game, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team will be conducting a uterine cancer fundraiser game on Friday, October 23 in rematch of last year's SUNYAC semifinals against Geneseo. This will be the first year for this fundraiser, as the team rallies and shows support towards one of the player's mother who begins her treatment process for this illness.
Throughout this season, the women will also be having a food collection to donate to a local food bank in the Plattsburgh area. They encourage everyone to bring a couple can goods to a game where they can donate their goods at designated collection bins.
Last year in addition to the cystic fibrosis fundraiser game, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team participated in several voluntary events.
They ran one million yards for Yards for Yeards in memory of Yeardley Love a former lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who was killed by her ex-boyfriend to raise awareness for her story and domestic violence.
The team helped out with "The Million Can Plan" where on Earth Day, the local Ted K. Center recycled 1,000,000 redeemable beverage cans. The Ted K. Center is a local center that strives to provide educational, social and recreational services to youth and families residing in the Plattsburgh Housing Authority developments.
In May, the women's team teamed up with Autism Speaks as the two hosted the first 5K Color Run throughout the campus of Plattsburgh State with all donations going to the Autism Speaks foundation.
