SUNYAC Announces 2015 Field Hockey Awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the 2015 Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, as voted on by the conference coaches. The conference office has also released the All-Conference teams.
Dani Ackerman, a senior midfielder at New Paltz, has been selected as the 2015 Offensive Player of the Year. Ackerman, a Nesconset, N.Y. native, guided the Hawks to their fourth consecutive SUNYAC title as the No. 2 seed going into the tournament. New Paltz upset top-seeded Cortland, 4-1 on Saturday. Ackerman started all 20 games and tallied 14 points so far this season as they head into NCAA play on Wednesday.
Jessica Caruana, a senior at New Paltz, has be awarded the 2015 Defensive Player of the Year. Caruana, originally of Holbrook, N.Y., was a quintessential part in only allowing 22 goals from opponents this season, while the Hawks managed to tally 54. Starting all 20 games for the New Paltz this season, Caruana also led the team in penalty shots and tallied a defensive save against both Oneonta and Brockport.
Rookie of the Year Award has been awarded to goalkeeper, Kailynne Reionoehl, of Cortland. Reionoehl, coming in from Lititz, P.A. , has started all 16 games for the Red Dragons this year and has played an integral role in Cortland's impressive 12-4 overall record this season. The Red Dragons was the top-seeded team going into the SUNYAC championship tournament finishing undefeated in regular-season conference play, 6-0. Reionoehl lead Cortland to eight shutouts, with a save percentage of .856, and recorded 77 saves this season.
The Hawks' head coach, Shanna Vitale has been named the SUNYAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career at New Paltz. Vitale led her team to their fourth-straight SUNYAC title, which are the only field hockey crowns New Paltz won in the history of the program. The Hawks (15-5) will host the first round of the NCAA tournament Wednesday and will face Simmons.
