PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team has announced Joe May as its new head coach.
Â
A one-time assistant coach at Plattsburgh State, May returns after a year stint as the defensive coordinator at Ohio Wesleyan University. Coach May had served as the primary assistant coach for two years under former head coach Ryan Cavanagh.
Â
In his one year at OWU, May helped guide the Battling Bishops to a perfect 14-0 regular season. The Battling Bishops would improve to 18-0 after winning the NCAC Tournament and their first two games in the NCAA Tournament. OWU would eventually end up falling to Gettysburg in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals.
Â
Under May's tutelage, OWU finished second in Division III men's lacrosse scoring defense, surrendering a mere 5.79 goals per game just behind Baldwin Wallace at 5.73. May was also instrumental in the development of four USILA All-Americans including two second teamers and a third teamer.
Â
In his two years at Plattsburgh State, May and the Cardinals went 27-10 and finished with two-straight SUNYAC Championship appearances, including the program's first ever home SUNYAC semifinal game. He was also a vital part of the program's first ever win against North Country rival St. Lawrence University. In two years, he coached and developed five All-Americans, including two defenders.
Â
May will make his head coaching debut against Skidmore in an exhibition game on February 14 before kicking off the regular season on the road against No. 18 Nazareth on February 20.
