SUNYAC announces first 2016 spring athletes of the week
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has named four athletes as the first 2016 spring Athletes of the Week.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Fabio Ricci (SR)
Cortland, Outfield (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake)
Ricci batted .579 (11-for-19) with two walks, two doubles, two steals and six runs scored as top-ranked Cortland opened the season with six straight wins. He went a combined 7-for-9 in two wins at fourth-ranked Salisbury; 4-for-5 with a double and two runs in an 8-4 win and 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, walk and two runs in a 27-13 victory. Ricci also was 2-for-2 with two runs in a 4-0 win over Lynchburg and 2-for-4 with a steal in a win versus Neumann during the Methodist Invitational.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Tanner Whiteman (SR) Â
Cortland (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia)
Whiteman has opened the season with a 2-0 record for the nationally top-ranked Red Dragons. He picked up a win in relief with one hitless inning and two strikeouts at fourth-ranked Salisbury, and threw six shutout innings in a 4-0 win over Lynchburg at the Methodist Invitational. Whiteman allowed only two hits, struck out seven and walked three in the victory over the Hornets.
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Zachary DeBottis (FR) Â
Geneseo, Attack (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North)
First-year attack Zachary DeBottis notched a game-high three goals and handed out one assist to lead the Knights to an 11-6 season-opening win against visiting Lycoming last Tuesday. After assisting on the game's first goal, DeBottis scored once in the 1st quarter and twice in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Michael Yehl (SO)
Geneseo (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili)
Sophomore Michael Yehl made nine saves and allowed only four goals in 56:23 Â to record his first win of the season in the Knights' 11-6 victory over visiting Lycoming last Tuesday.
