SUNYAC announces annual men's soccer awards for 2015

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces the men's soccer all-conference and individual awards for the 2015 season, as voted on by the conference coaches. Brockport's Peter DiLorenzo was named the Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year, while Oneonta's Jared Van Brunt earned the Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year. Bernard Osei of Oswego was named Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year honors went to Oneonta's Iain Byrne.

DiLorenzo, a senior forward from Hicksville, N.Y., helped lead the Golden Eagles to a 12-4-2 overall record and a second place finish in the SUNYAC. He started all 18 games, scoring 13 goals, including a conference-high five game winners, while adding two assists for a total of 28 points on the season, good for second in the conference. DiLorenzo's 1.56 points per game average, along with his 13 goals and .772 goals per game average, were also good for second in the conference. He led the conference in shots (81) and shots per game (4.50). DiLorenzo earned first team all-SUNYAC honors to go along with the Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year award.

The Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year Award is named after the highly successful Soccer Coach at Brockport. Parker coached soccer for 14 years, winning the SUNYAC conference twice (1961-1968) and sharing the championship in 1970.

Van Brunt, the senior defenseman from Sayville, N.Y., helped anchor a defense that only allowed nine goals on 113 total shots all season, giving them a .47 goals against average, leading to a 15-3-1 overall record and a SUNYAC Championship. Jared started all 19 games to this point, and has even contributed on the offensive end of the field, scoring three goals while tallying three assists for nine total points on the year. Van Brunt was a first team all-SUNYAC selection in addition to being the Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year.

The Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year award is named after T. Fred "Prof" Holloway who coached Men's Soccer at Cortland from 1936-1972. His teams recorded a combined record of 191-94-23 and had only two losing seasons in 35 years. His teams captured six SUNYAC Championships and appeared in three NCAA tournaments. In 1958, Holloway was selected as the recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's most coveted laurel, the Annual Honor Award. In 1987, Cortland dedicated it's soccer field in his honor. Holloway passed away in 1990.

The men's soccer Rookie of the Year award was given to Bernard Osei of Oswego. In his first collegiate campaign, the Syracuse, N.Y. native appeared in 15 of 16 contests, starting seven for the 5-10-1 Lakers. He tallied four goals and three assists for 11 points on the season, all of which were team-highs. Osei also led Oswego with 38 total shots and was second on the team with 15 shots on goal.

In his 13th year at the helm, Coach of the Year Iain Byrne of Oneonta again has the Red Dragons poised for a national championship run. Byrne has led his team to a 15-3-1 overall record and both the SUNYAC regular season and tournament titles. They earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, and are set to host the City College of New York on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. The conference championship is Oneonta's fourth in the last five years and ninth overall. The Red Dragons look to make another deep run in the NCAA tournament, as the 2014 squad made a Final Four appearance before losing to Wheaton College (Ill.) 3-2 in double overtime in the national semifinal. Byrne, a South African, played professionally and was a youth soccer coach and director in Georgia and Florida before coming to the United States in 1986. He eventually settled in Oneonta in 1997, where he was an assistant for six years before taking over the head coaching position.
