SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Set for Feb. 23
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) indoor track and field teams will travel to Brockport, NY February 23rd for the 2013 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Eight men’s and women’s teams will be competing in the event at the College at Brockport’s Special Events Recreation Center (SERC) located on campus. The field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. while the first track events will be at 11:00 a.m.
Last year, the Geneseo men won their seventh championship title while the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons won their 15th women’s championship.
On the men’s side, the Geneseo Blue Knights scored 152 points last season to beat out second place Cortland State (118). Geneseo had seven first place finishes last year. Many first and second place finishers from last year have graduated, so we can expect an exciting competition between SUNYAC indoor track and field teams this year.
SUNY Cortland won the women’s championship last year with a 42 point cushion with 163 points, followed by Buffalo Sate with 121 points. The Red Dragons won one relay title and three individual crowns. Cortland sophomore, Sarah Bonnell won the long jump with a score of 5.61 meters, breaking the old SUNYAC record from 1986.
The SUNY Cortland women are ranked 6th nationally for Division III, while the SUNY Oneonta men are ranked 18th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Division III national poll . (I updated this 2/18/13)

Below is an event-by-event preview for the 2013 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Women
60-meter dash: Last year marked the change from the 55 meter event to the 60 meter event. Sasha Henry (Buffalo State) won the event with a time of 7.65, followed by Sarah Bonnell (Cortland) with 7.87. Jazmin Dunham (Buffalo State) came in third with 7.93. This year’s top performance list is similar to last year’s championship finish. Henry once again holds the top time of 7.64, followed by Dunham and Bonnell. Henry's top performance time has her ranked No. 1 in the nation for Division III indoor track and field.
200-meter dash: Sasha Henry (Buffalo) won the event last year with a time of 25.73 and will be returning this year to defend her title. Diahann Cuevo (Genseo) placed second, and Oneonta’s Kaitlyn Brandt placed third. This year, Jazmin Dunham (Buffalo), the 2011 winner, has the top time of 25.76, followed by her teammate, Sasha Henry (25.78). Cortland’s Sarah Bonnell has the third best time of 25.85.
400-meter dash: Last year, Mariah Brown (Buffalo State) won the 400 meter dash. This year, it appears she is not competing in the event. With her absence, Buffalo State freshman, Sasa Vann has the top performance time of 58.63, followed by an Oswego Laker, Katie Bott (59.66), and Cortland’s Africa Harper with 1:00.19.
800-meter run: Amy McCasland (Plattsburgh) won the event last year, but has graduated, so a new winner will be crowned this year. Geneseo’s Keira Wood and Cailin Kowalewski finished second and third respectively in the event. With McCasland’s absence, Wood has the top performance time this season of 2:14.81, followed by Plattsburgh’s Amanda Schermerhorn (2:16.20).
Mile: Jordyn Naylon(Cortland) won the event last year with a time of 5:02.21. Geneseo’s Marissa Liberati came in third with 5:08.33, and Mary Aldridge (Geneseo) with 5:09.15. Coming into the event this year, the Geneseo Knights have the top performance times. Alyssa Smith has the best time of 5:01.48, followed by Keira Wood (5:06.06), and Cailin Kowalewski (5:08.28). Last year’s champion currently has the fourth top performance time.
3,000-meter run: Marissa Liberati, a Genseo Knight won the 3,000-meter run last year with a time of 10:04.95. For the 2012-2013 season, Alyssa Smith (Geneseo) has the top performance time of 10:26.40. Danielle Kennedy (Oneonta) is close behind with a second place performance time of 10:27.09, followed by Mary Aldridge (Geneseo) with a time of 10:28.00. Rachel Malone (Brockport) and Cailin Kowalewski (Genseo) are other names to look out for in the 3,000-meter run.
5,000-meter run: Plattsburgh’s Stefanie Braun won the event last year, but with her absence Oneonta’s Danielle Kennedy has the top performance time coming into this year's championship. Kennedy has a first place performance time of 17:47.65.
60-meter hurdles: Buffalo State Jazmin Dunham won the event as a freshman, and last year as a sophomore with a time of 8.93. The second place finisher graduated, but third place Nicole Shafer (Cortland) will be returning this year. Jazmin Dunham continues to be in the lead this season. She currently has the top performance time of 8.74, followed by Treasure Glymph (Buffalo State) with 9.32. Coming in third with a top performance time is freshman Kenya Outram of Cortland State with 9.35. Dunham looks to win back to back titles in the 60 meter hurdles.
4x400-meter relay: Last year, Cortland won the 4x400 relay for the first time in eight years. This year they’re coming into the championship with a top time of 3:58.18 with Geneseo right behind 4:03.53. Buffalo State has the second top time, Geneseo has the third, and Oswego State has the fourth, separated by one or two seconds. We can expect to see these teams in the top three, but Cortland looks to win the 4x400 for the second year in a row.
Distance medley relay: Last year’s distance medley relay finished in the order of Plattsburgh, Geneseo, and Brockport. With Plattsburgh losing two of its winning members, and Geneseo returning with all of its team, Geneseo currently has the top performance time and a SUNYAC record. The Geneseo distance medley relay team is also ranked second nationally for Division III. Plattsburgh and Fredonia have the second top performance times.
High jump: Cortland’s Taylor Hudson won the event last year as a freshman and is returning this year to defend her title. She has the current top performance jump of 1.65m. SUNY Cortland owns the top spots on the indoor performance list for the high jump. Nicole Shafer who finished fourth last year shares the current top performance with Hudson. Cortland junior, Lexi Budd is also on the top of the performance list with a 1.60m jump.
Pole vault: Oswego’s Brittany Dalcais won the event last year with a jump of 3.50m. This year her best jump has been 3.55m, second best in the league. Cortland's Kelly Hugo has the best performance of 3.60m breaking a SUNYAC record. Christi Nassaeuer and Alex Seymour, both Cortland Red Dragons, also have top performances.
Long jump: Last year’s winner, Sarah Bonnell (Cortland) will be returning and has the current top jump of 5.86m, which ranks her in the top five nationally for Division III. Her teammates Taylor Hudson (5.53m), and Nicole Shafer (5.22m) have top jumps as well. Hudson finished second last year and looks to place in the top three again this year. Jazlyn Porter (Buffalo State) is the only non-Cortland jumper in the top five of the performance list, coming in third.
Triple jump: Last year's winner of the triple jump has graduated. Buffalo State's Jessica Walker won the event three years in a row. This year it's looking like Buffalo's winning streak will be broken. Currently, Cortland's Amber Stephens has the top performance of 11.71m and is ranked in the top five nationally for Division III. Hailey Smith (Brockport) has the second highest performance of 10.72m. Emily Cimminskey(Fredonia) and Erica Wharton(Cortland) have close jumps for the third and fourth highest performances.
Shot put: Brockport’s Nicole Jones won the event last year and currently has the top performance in the league. Jones and her teammates Ann Milliken, Courtney White and Valerie Vancol make up four of the top five performance throws. Nicole Desens of Fredonia has the third top performance in the league.
Weight throw: Sarah Timmons (Oneonta) won the event at last year's championships. She has graduated and with her absence, last year's second place finisher Nicole Jones (Brockport) has the top performance in the league of 16.32m. Her fellow teammates Ann Milliken and Kristine Hoover have the second and fourth highest performances this season. Plattsburgh's Amanda Gadway broke through the Brockport athletes for the third best performance of 15.08m.
Men
60-meter dash: Sean Bernstein (Oneonta) won the event last year. This year, he goes into the championship with a top time of 6.87, but Brockport’s Dre Johnson will bring the heat with a top time of 6.84. Freshman Joe Carr (Oneonta) has a top performance time of 6.96.
200-meter dash: Sean Bernstein (Oneonta) also took first place in the 200m dash at the 2012 SUNYAC indoor track and field championships. Last year, he went into the event with the top performance time. This year, he is in the same position, with a top performance time of 21.68. If he continues to perform on that level, he is looking likely to set a new SUNYAC record for the 200m dash. The current record is 22.45, set by a Cortland runner in 2008. Bernstein's fellow teammate, Jake Alviene has the second best performance time of 22.43.
400-meter dash: Cortland's Eric Banks won the 400m dash last year with a time of 49.82. This year he will be returning, and is coming into the event this year with the fastest performance time of 49.71. Last year's 5th place finisher, Stephan Linton has the second top time of 49.85. Joe Carr (Oneonta) is coming into the event with the third best performance time of 50.30. The leader board in this event has been changing frequently, so it should be an exciting race.
800-meter run: Last year, Chris Carter of Geneseo came into the event with the top performance time and won the event. This year he's coming into the event again with second top performance time of 1:55.31. Brockport's Nate Mathews has the top performance time of 1:54.60. A freshman, Bumkuth Jiak(Buffalo) is close behind with a top time of 1:56.20.
Mile: Eddie Novara, a Geneseo Knight won the event last year, but has graduated. With his absence, Cortland junior, Cody Amengual has the top performance time of 4:18.35. Cortland’s Pat Fannon has the second best performance time of 4:20.41 followed by Brockport junior Andrew Baker 4:20.62.
3,000-meter run: Two Geneseo seniors took first and second place in last year's 3,000 meter run. With them gone, Alex Ngabo (Oneonta) currently has the top performance time in the league of 8:40.51. Alex Brimstein and Chris Mateer, both of Geneseo also have top performance times. Two Cortland runners, Tom Hopkins and Cody Amengual also have competitive times. These names are likely to finish strong in the event.
5,000-meter run:
A new winner will be crowned this year in the 5,00-meter run. Both the first and second place finishers have graduated. Geneseo’s Alex Brimstein has the top performance time of the season (14:47.85). Last year's fourth place finisher, Tom Hopkins (Cortland) currently has the second best performance time in the league of 14:59.94.
60-meter hurdles: An Oswego senior won the event last year, so a fresh face will be the victor in the event this year. Oneonta freshman, Jake Alviene has the best performance time of 8:15 coming into the event. Last year's second place finisher, Rob Farrell (Oneonta) has the second best performance time of 8.35. The third and fourth best performance times are held by Carl Caughell and Eric Williams respectively, two Fredonia runners.
4x400-meter relay: Cortland won the 4x400 event last year and is looking to take first place again this year with just one member not returning from its winning team. The Cortland 4x400 relay team currently has the best performance in the league with time of 3:21.46. Oneonta is close behind with a top performance time of 3:22.59. Finally, Buffalo State has a top performance time of 3:26.97, putting them in third on the top performance time list.
Distance medley relay: Geneseo won the event last year, and has the fastest performance time coming into the event for this year's championship with a time of 10:06.32. Buffalo State has the second best time of 10:10.80, followed by Fredonia(10:18.51).
High jump: Brandon Loomis, a Cortland Red Dragon won the event last year with a jump of 1.93m. This year, Brandon Joyce, a Brockport freshman has the best performance in the league of 2.04m. The second best jump in the conference is a tie between Luke Taverne(Geneseo) and Cortland's PJ Flynn with jumps of 1.94m.
Pole vault: Last year, Zach Ferrara, a Brockport Golden Eagle broke Cortland's nine year winning streak in the pole vault event. Ferrara went into the event last year with the best performance during regular season to take first place in the SUNYAC championship. This year, Ferrara once again has the best performance of 4.88m coming into the event. Connor Ten Eyck (Cortland) is close behind with a top performance of 4.80m. Cortland's Dan Fugazot has the third best performance of the season with 4.50m.
Long jump: Wenley Louis came into the event last year with the best performance jump and ended up winning the event. However, he has graduated, so there will be a new winner for the long jump this year. Cory Cox (Buffalo) currently has the best performance of 7.16m, followed by Shaun Winter (Buffalo) with a top performance of 7.01. Cortland’s Andre Hernandez-Green, holds the third top spot, 6.91m.

Weight throw: Dustin Colgan (Brockport) also won the weight throw during last year's SUNYAC championship. With his graduation, last year's second place finisher, J.D. Roth (Oneonta) has the best performance of the season so far with a score of 17.10. His teammate, Pat Weiner has the second top performance of 16.34m. Tyler Prendergast, a Cortland State junior has the third best performance of 16.28m.
