SUNYAC men's basketball conference awards released
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to recognize and award this season's Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams for the 2014-15 men's basketball season. All awards were voted on by the SUNYAC men's basketball conference coaches.
Gordon Lyons (Amherst, N.Y. Canisius) from Geneseo is this season's Player of the Year. Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y.) from Fredonia was awarded Rookie of the Year. The 2014-2015 Coach of the Year award goes to Oswego's Jason Leone.
Gordon Lyons led SUNYAC in scoring and rebounding; he ranks third in the conference for field goal percentage. Lyons was leading the country in rebounding going into the championship weekend. He totaled 22 points per game in the last eight games (7-1). Lyons also had 22 double doubles, 15 of which were in conference games.
Ian Helps was the leading scorer for Fredonia with 14.2 points per game and the leading rebounder with 8.7 per game. He shoots 55 percent from the floor and averages 29 minutes per game. His statistics not only lead all rookies, but they put him in the top half in these conference categories
Jason Leone was named Coach of the Year after he led Oswego to its second SUNYAC Championship win in four years. This is Leone's second Championship victory in his four years at Oswego. Entering the championships, Oswego was the third seed in the conference and they defeated the top seeded Plattsburgh 70-58. Oswego will continue on to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they will face Calvin College in the first round match up. Leone was also named the Coach of the Year in 2012, which is also the last time Oswego captured the SUNYAC title.
