Oswego Set To Host First and Second Rounds of NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 6 Oswego State Men's Basketball team returns to the court this Friday at HOME for the first round of the NCAA Tournament! The Lakers will be hosting the Marymount Saints of Virginia on Friday, March 3 at 5:45PM.
Marymount comes into the contest with a 17-10 overall record and 10-2 mark in the Atlantic East Conference (AEC). The Saints are on a current 4-game winning streak, with their last loss coming against conference rival Neumann on February 8th. Marymount has a 10-5 record on their home court of Converse Family Field House, 7-3 on the road and 0-2 in neutral-sited contests.
Marymount averages 72.3 points per contest on 45.0% shooting. Nationally, they rank 13th in the country in three-point percentage with a value of 38.8%. Leading the Saints in average minutes played per game is Marcus Stubbs with 31.7 minutes played per game. Stubbs also leads the squad in field goals made (146), field goal attempts (302), three-pointers made (77), three-point attempts a(172), three-point percentage (44.8%), is 70-76 on free throws which is good 92.1%, Stubbs also leads the Saints in points and averages 16.9 points per game and steals (35), blocks (15). In the rebounding category, Jack Bifano leads with 29 offensive rebounds and 120 defensive rebounds. Bifano also leads the team in personal fouls with 70. Ra'Shawn Cook is at the top of the Saints with 68 assists and also leads the team in turnovers with 62.
Oswego comes into the contest with the same 25-2 overall record and 17-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as they came into the 2021-22 tournament with. The Lakers last loss came to their SUNYAC rival Brockport.The Lakers' only two losses came on November 22nd to Nazareth in a three point loss and an 11-point loss to Brockport on December 2nd.
The Lakers have continued their offensive threat where they left off last year, Oswego is averaging 3.5 more points per game than they did through the round of 32 last year and is averaging a 2.1% higher field goal percentage at 46.9%. Oswego has held their opponents to 63.0 points per game and a field goal percentage of 39.8%. Oswego's defense is one of the best in the nation, ranking ninth in assist to turnover ratio, 22nd in defensive rebounds per game, 20th in total rebounds per game, 21st in scoring defense, 2nd in scoring defense, 2nd in scoring margin, 19th in scoring offense, 10th three-point percentage, 18th in opposing three-point percentage and 4th in winning percentage. Four Lakers average double figures on the season just as they did last year. Jeremiah Sparks leads the Lakers in points per game with 16.4, followed by Devin Green (13.6), Ahkee Anderson (11.5), and Cartier Bowman (10.6).
In the SUNYAC Championship game against the Golden Eagles of Brockport, Oswego was led by Sophomore Ahkee Anderson with 22 points, followed by Cartier Bowman (15), Jeremiah Sparks (14) and Devin Green (12). Jamal Achille led the squad in steals with four, followed by Jermiah Sparks and Devin Green both with three. The difference in the game was bench points and second chance points. Oswego outscored Brockport in second chance points 19-4 throughout the contest and 11-2 with points off of the bench.
The winner of #6 Oswego State/Marymount will take on the winner of #10 John Carroll/Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 5:45PM right here in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
