SUNYAC releases 2015 softball preseason poll
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York State Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) 2015 softball preseason poll has arrived.
Cortland and Oneonta are tied atop the 2015 SUNYAC softball preseason poll with 77 points each.
The defending SUNYAC regular season and conference tournament champions, Oneonta enters the season with second year head coach, Sara Headley, who earned Coach of the Year honors in her first campaign at Oneonta. The Red Dragons went 30-11 in 2014, beating Cortland 8-0 in the conference tournament championship and earning an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament (first NCAA appearance since 2004). Sophomore Sabrina DeAngelis returns after winning Pitcher and Rookie of the Year in 2014.
Cortland is led by head coach Julie Lenhart, who is the winningest softball coach in school history. The Red Dragons ended the 2014 season second in the conference, 14-4 and 28-15 overall. Cortland will look to fill the gap left by 2014 senior outfielder, Meaghan Kohler who was honored as the SUNYAC Player of the Year.
Brockport is third in the preseason poll with 59 points, led by coach John Dumaw, who has been at the helm since 1998. Under his guidance, the program has won 20 or more games in each of the last 10 seasons. They finished with a 25-11 (12-6 SUNYAC) record in 2014 and return 2014 SUNYAC All-Tournament selection, senior outfielder, Brianna Ferchen.
Buffalo State is fourth in the preseason ranking with 57 points, after a 19-16 (10-8) 2014 campaign. The Bengals return 2014 All-Tournament outfielder, Joanna Bardak.
With 55 points, Geneseo is fifth in the preseason. The Knights finished in fourth place in the 2014 season. The program has appeared in the SUNYAC tournament the last six seasons and 15 of its last 16.
In sixth place is New Paltz, with 38 points. The Hawks finished in sixth place in 2014 and will be looking for its third consecutive SUNYAC postseason.
Fighting to get into SUNYAC postseason play, Fredonia takes the seventh spot, with 33 points, Oswego is eighth (23 points), Plattsburgh ninth (16 points), and Potsdam tenth (15 points)
The season kicks off in a few short weeks, best of luck to all the programs!
