    Cortland Men and Geneseo Women Win SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships

    The SUNY Cortland men and Geneseo women captured the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving titles Saturday at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, NY.

    The Cortland men won its first SUNYAC Championship since 1998 taking the crown from Geneseo who held it since that time. Head coach Brian Tobin was named the SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year as voted on by the conference coaches. The Geneseo men finished second followed by Oneonta.

    The Geneseo women repeat as champions for the sixth year in a row and earn their 21st title overall. Geneseo head coach Paul Dotterweich was named the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year. Cortland women finished second followed by Fredonia.

    New Paltz's Yuka Suzuka won the Grace Mowatt Award while Geneseo's Frank Schiappa won the James Fulton Award as voted on by the conference coaches. These awards are given annually to a female and male senior swimmer or diver based on AllAmerican Honors, All-SUNYAC honors, improvement throughout collegiate career and academic achievement. Grace was a long time swimming coach at SUNY Oswego, was a pioneer of women's swimming in the SUNYAC. James was a long time swimming coach at Brockport and was instrumental in developing the SUNYAC swimming program.

    Nine SUNYAC and meet records were broken Saturday night.

    New Paltz’s Chelsea Allocco finished the 1650 yard freestyle in 17:09.21 to break the 2010 record of 17:22.78.

    Geneseo’s John Nasky made a new SUNYAC meet record in the 1650 yard freestyle finishing 16:02.50. Naskey topped the 2009 record of 16:08.60. Kaitlin Wilcoxen broke the SUNYAC meet record during prelims in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:20.64) and captured the title later in the night. Bryan Jun won the 200 yard butterfly making a new SUNYAC meet and conference record with a time of 1:53.10.

    Oneonta’s Alex Miller captured the 200 yard backstroke title and broke the SUNYAC meet and conference record with a time of 1:51.62. Miller was also named the 2013 SUNYAC Men’s Outstanding Swimmer.

    Potsdam’s Xander Taylor won the 200 yard breaststroke breaking the SUNYAC meet and conference record. Taylor broke the meet record in prelims and topped his time in the finals finishing 2:05.48.

    New Paltz’s Carly Marshall won the 200 yard butterfly and made a new SUNYAC meet and conference record with a time of 2:06.80. Marshall broke the meet record in prelims and bettered her time to break her own record in the finals.

    Fredonia diver, Ashley Keller scored 489.95 points to take the SUNYAC meet and conference records. Keller was also named the 2013 SUNYAC Women’s Outstanding Diver.

    SUNY Cortland’s men 400 free relay team of Mark Schoenherr, Benjamin Strickland, Dan Maximowicz and Judd Simon took the title with a time of 3:06.24 which is a new meet and conference record.

    Fredonia diver, Ryan Fuller won the 3 meter diving with 513.3 points and the 1 meter with 511.8. Fuller was named the 2013 Men’s Outstanding Diver.

    Another seven SUNYAC meet records were broken on Friday.

    New Paltz’s women’s 200 yard medley relay team of Yuka Suzuka, Colleen Stewart, Carly Marshall and Victoria Scalise topped the 2011 meet and conference record of 1:46.44 finishing 1:46.36. The Hawks added another accolade when Chelsea Allocco broke the 2009 meet and conference record (4:32.90) in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:30.56.

    Geneseo’s Kristian Tialios, Greg Marks, Bryan Jun and Frank Schiappa finished the 200 yard medley relay in 1:33.05 to better the 2012 meet and conference record that Cortland made last year.

    Oneonta’s Miller was the 2013 SUNYAC Champion in the 400 yard individual medley and broke the 15-year meet and conference record (4:08.00) finishing in 4:07.81. Later in the night Miller broke the 100 yard backstroke meet and conference record finishing with a time of 50.90, .38 faster than the record made earlier in the day by teammate Colton Roe.

    Geneseo’s Bryan Jun took the 100 yard butterfly finishing 50.00. Jun broke the 1999 SUNYAC meet and conference record of 50.26.

    Blue Wave women’s 800 yard freestyle relay of Haleigh Wixson, Corinne Vairo, Elyssa Max and Abigail Max made a new SUNYAC meet record by over three seconds with a time of 7:37.97.

    Thursday three SUNYAC meet records were broken with two on the men’s side and one women’s. Cortland men and Geneseo women finished the night on the top of the team score board with 256 and 227 points respectively.

    SUNY Cortland men’s 200 freestyle relay team broke both the SUNYAC meet and conference record. The team of Dan Maximowicz, Like Strothenke, Mark Schoenherr, and Judd Simon finished with a time of 1:22.89 breaking the 2008 meet record of 1:23.33 and the 2011 conference record of 1:23.24.

    Geneseo’s Kristian Tialios broke the SUNYAC meet record in the 200 yard individual medley. Tialios finished 1:54.62 beating Kevin Crossman’s 15-year old record of 1:54.71.

    Geneseo’s Abigail Max broke the 2009 SUNYAC meet record in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:58.11. Max was named the 2013 SUNYAC Women’s Outstanding Swimmer.

    Cortland’s men finished in the top three spots in the 200 yard freestyle to keep the lead with a team score of 519, 43 points ahead of Geneseo. Geneseo women took the top spot in three races to push the team lead to 516, over 100 points ahead of second place Cortland (403).
