Results
BUFFALO – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships began today with preliminaries this morning followed by finals this evening. After completing the first 10 events, Geneseo leads the men's and women's teams with 226 and 270 points respectively.
On the men's side, Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Athletic Center saw three NCAA “B” cuts, two SUNYAC meet records and one SUNYAC overall record during Thursday's session alone.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the Fredonia foursome of John Estanislau, Andrew Case, Dave Adamczak and Adrian Van Hall combined to win by nearly two seconds, charting a time of 1:23.40. Estanislau kicked off the relay with an NCAA “B” cut time of 20.83 in the 50 freestyle, shaving less than a tenth of a second off his top time of the morning. Geneseo took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.05), while Cortland placed third (1:25.47).
Two-time defending SUNYAC champion John Nasky of Geneseo, who was the lone person to set a conference meet record in the preliminary heats, lowered his meet record time in the 500 freestyle, pacing the field with a 4:35.09. That performance also met the NCAA provisional cut. Mark Hanafin finished second with a 4:41.86 standard, while Jack Spader of New Paltz touched third (4:41.88).
Kenny Athans of Geneseo wiped out a conference meet and conference overall mark in the 200 individual medley, checking in with an NCAA “B” standard of 1:53.36. Defending SUNYAC champion and teammate Kristian Tialios placed second with a 1:55.62, while Lucas Santiago of Oneonta was third with a 1:58.13.
Estanislau was unable to better his lead-off split from the 200 freestyle relay in the championship final of the 50 freestyle, but he did claim the top spot on the podium nonetheless with a mark of 20.98. Potsdam's Ty Zapisek touched second (21.27), while Tyler Roth of Geneseo came in third (21.42).
In the 1-meter dive, Alex Fleet of Buffalo State edged Fredonia's Jeff Matter and Oneonta's Jeremaine Miller in a tightly-contested race for the conference title. Fleet posted a score of 501.05, while Matter and Miller posted marks of 499.65 and 499.60, respectively.
Finally, in the 400 medley relay, the Geneseo foursome of Tialios, Athans, Yonghoon Jun and Tyler Roth held off a late charge by Cortland to win the event. Cortland settled for second (3:26.57), while Oneonta was third (3:30.11).
On the women's side, Geneseo swept the first three races of the night; 200 yard freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 yard individual medley (IM). The foursome of Julie Holloway, Stephanie Wilcoxen, Kala Wilkins and Abigail Max started off the night for the Blue Wave with a win in the 200 yard freestyle relay. This was Geneseo's first SUNYAC Championship in this event since 2011. The Blue Wave finished in 1:35.71 and broke the SUNYAC championship meet and conference records set in 2009.
Abigail Max took the 500 yard freestyle title for the third consecutive year after she touched the wall in 4:57.07 to break the SUNYAC meet record that she set in 2013, 4:58.11.
