Cortland Baseball Top Seed at Newark (N.Y.) NCAA Regional, Will Face Castleton Wednesday

The SUNY Cortland baseball team has received a berth into the 56-team NCAA Division III playoffs for the 22nd straight season and the 23rd time overall. The Red Dragons (31-8) have earned the top seed in an eight-team regional that will be hosted May 14-18 by Ithaca College at Colburn Park in Newark, N.Y.

    Cortland will play on Wednesday, May 14, at 1:15 p.m. versus eighth-seeded Castleton (Vt.) (29-10). Wednesday's other games feature: fourth-seeded Rutgers-Camden (N.J.) (29-11-1) versus fifth-seeded Farmingdale State (25-11) at 10 a.m.; third-seeded Amherst (Mass.) (28-9) versus sixth-seeded Stevens Institute (N.J.) (26-13) at 4:30 p.m.; and second-seeded Kean (N.J.) (31-12) versus seventh-seeded Union (26-10-1) at 7:45 p.m.

Tournament action continues with four games on both Thursday and Friday, starting at 10 a.m., along with two games Saturday and one game, if needed, on Sunday. Tickets each day are $4 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased at the gate. The winner of the double-elimination regional advances to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series, which will be held May 23-27 in Grand Chute, Wis. (near Appleton; south of Green Bay). The World Series will be in Wisconsin for the 15th straight year.

The Red Dragons earned an automatic berth into this year's NCAA tournament by winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) postseason tournament May 2-4 in Cortland. Under 15th-year head coach Joe Brown, Cortland reached the 30-win plateau for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons. Cortland's run of 22 straight NCAA appearances is the longest active streak in Division III.

Cortland has won regional titles in 11 of the last 19 years. Cortland advanced to the World Series in 1995, five straight years from 1997-2001, as well as in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Cortland placed second in the region in 1996, 2003, 2006, 2011 and 2013. The Red Dragons finished second nationally at both the 2010 and 2005 World Series, third in both 1997 and 1998 and fourth in both 2007 and 2012.
