Cortland to Host NCAA Second Round Men's Lacrosse Game May 11
The SUNY Cortland men’s lacrosse team has received a bye into the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III tournament and will host either Ohio Wesleyan or Aurora on Saturday, May 11, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time is to be announced.
Ohio Wesleyan (13-5) is hosting Aurora (16-3) in a first-round game Wednesday.
The winner of Saturday's game advances to the national quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 15, and will face an opponent to be determined. Cortland appears to be the top seed in its half of the national bracket and, if so, would host any games it plays through the national semifinals. The semifinals will be held on campus sites Sunday, May 19. The Division III national championship game is Sunday, May 26, at 4 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Cortland (17-0), under seventh-year head coach Steve Beville, is undefeated entering the NCAA tournament for the second straight season. The Red Dragons are making their 13th straight NCAA tournament appearance and 29th overall, including 22 on the Division III level.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the NCAA Div. III title game before suffering its first loss of the season to also-undefeated Salisbury University. The Red Dragons have played in the national championship game five times since 2006 – four straight showings from 2006-09 as well as last season. Cortland won the 2006 national crown, the last time the finals were held in Philadelphia, as well as in 2009 in Foxborough, Mass.
Cortland earned its NCAA berth this season by winning its sixth straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title, 9-2 versus Plattsburgh, this past Saturday.
