The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) will have six swimmers, three divers and two relay teams competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.
The 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, which are co-hosted by Beloit College and the College of Wooster, will occur from March 23-26 at the University of Tennessee’s Jones Aquatic Center. Each day of the meet, the preliminary heats will go off at 10 a.m. EST, while finals will be held at 6 p.m. EST.
Geneseo senior Michelle Rodriguez, who won all of her individual events at the SUNYAC championship and was named SUNYAC Swimmer of the Meet for the third consecutive year, will compete in the 100 – 200 – and 500 freestyle. She is seeded in the top 15 for all three events, including a sixth seed in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.44, five seconds behind NCAA record holder Kendra Stern of Amherst. Rodriguez is a 13 time All-American (eight relay and five individual), including two first team in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles and one honorable mention in the 500-yard freestyle last year.
SUNY New Paltz will be sending the women’s 200 medley relay contingent of sophomore Yuka Suzuka, senior Becky Baker, sophomore Carly Marshall and junior Christine Rieth to national meet with the 16th-fastest time this season. The Hawks clocked a time of 1:46.44 at the conference championship, setting a new school, conference and meet record in the event.
All four members of the Hawks’ 200 medley relay team were not selected into the meet in an individual event. However, all four will get to compete in the events in which they registered NCAA “B” qualifying marks during the 2010-11 season. According to the psych sheet, Suzuka is seeded 31st in the 100 backstroke (58.18) and 38th in the 200 backstroke (2:07.41), Baker is seeded 25th in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.87), Marshall is seeded 27th in the 200 butterfly (2:07.93) and Rieth is seeded 40th in the 50 freestyle (24.05) and 38th in the 100 freestyle (52.39).
In addition, the four will have the opportunity to swim other relays and are most likely to compete in the 400 medley relay as well. This is the third time that Rieth has made the trip to nationals, and it marks Baker’s second appearance at the national-championship meet. Suzuka and Marshall are going for the first time in their collegiate swimming careers.
Fredonia State sophomore Sarah Ficarro and The College at Brockport senior Maria Quagliana have each qualified in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Ficarro, SUNYAC Diver of the Meet for the second straight year, returns to the national stage after finishing runner up in the 1-meter springboard in 2010 and sixth in the 3-meter event.
Quagliana will be making her third consecutive appearance at nationals, after becoming the first female in the history of Brockport swimming and diving to earn an All-America honor with a ninth place finish in the 1-meter in 2010.

Geneseo will be the only school with representation on the men’s side by senior Wills DeMoulin, sophomore Frank Schiappa and a relay squad.
DeMoulin, a two-time honorable mention All-American, returns for the third straight year and is looking to improve upon his 10th place finish on the one-meter board. If all goes well it could be back-to-back titles for a SUNYAC diver as Potsdam’s Nathan LaRowe won in 2010. Wills will also compete in the 3-meter event.
Schiappa will be competing in three individual events and four relays throughout the championship. He will look to make a splash in the 50-yard freestyle after turning in a new meet record at the conference championships. Schiappa is seeded 12th in the event out of 41 competitors with a time of 20.69; the top time in the event on the season is 20.06. He will also be swimming in the 100 and 200 freestyle.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Schiappa, Aaron Wagner, Andrew Kuter and Dan Strothenke which turned in a SUNYAC and school record time of 1:23.24 at their last chance meet are seeded 13th out of 26 teams. The quartet will also be swimming the 400 and 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay.
