New Paltz Women's Basketball Draws Babson in NCAA Tournament First Round

INDIANAPOLIS – The State University of New York at New Paltz women’s basketball team (24-3) learned its fate on Monday and will face off with New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion Babson College (25-2) in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, as announced by the NCAA during its annual Selection Show on NCAA.com.
First round games are slated to be played on Friday, March 1, with the second round taking place the following day. New Paltz and Babson will play their tournament opener at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champion Hawks earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament with their 64-53 SUNYAC Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament final victory over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at the Hawk Center. The Hawks were the top seed in the SUNYAC Tournament after finishing the season with a 16-2 conference record.
The No. 17 ranked Babson Beavers earned the NEWMAC’s automatic qualifier after defeating Wellesley College, 66-55, in the NEWMAC Tournament final on Sunday. The Beavers finished a perfect 18-0 in their conference, with their only losses of the season coming at the hands of DePauw University and Williams College, both of which also qualified for this year’s NCAA Tournament.
Friday’s winner will take on the winner of Tufts (23-2) and St. Lawrence University (19-8).
