Persinger, Seaman and Bickford Named SUNYAC Women's Ice Hockey Athletes of the Week
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC picks its first women's ice hockey weekly awards for the 2024-25 season. Cortland's Kayla Persinger is the SUNYAC Women's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week, while Canton teammates Abby Seaman and Ally Bickford are the the Goaltender and Rookie of the Week respectively.
Persinger had a pair of strong performances for nationally 10th-ranked Cortland in a 2-0 weekend, recording five points on two goals and three assists, while also posting an on-ice rating of (+6). In an 8-1 victory over Manhattanville on Saturday, Persinger scored two goals and added two assists, and had an on-ice rating on (+5) for the day. That followed up a performance on Friday evening where Persinger had the primary assist on the game-winning goal and also helped lead the Cortland defense to a shutout.
Seaman recorded a 42 save shutout in her Canton debut to lead the Roos to a 1-0 overtime win at No. 2 nationally-ranked Adrian University on Friday. The win was the highest ranked win for any Canton team in school history since joining Division III and just the second ranked victory for the Roos in women's hockey program history. Canton earned their first win against a ranked opponent last season when they defeated No. 13 Cortland 2-1 in OT on December 6th. The sophomore stopped 10 shots in the first period and 15 each in the second and third periods to keep the game scoreless. She then stopped two more in OT before the Roos scored the game-winner. On Saturday Seaman made 38 more saves stopping 11 in the first period, 12 in the second and 15 in the third in a 5-0 loss to the second ranked Bulldogs. For the week she recorded a .941 save % recording 80 saves in two games.
Bickford had the primary assist on the game-winner 1 minute and 44 seconds into OT to lead the Roos to a 1-0 win at No. 2 nationally-ranked Adrian on Friday. The win was the highest ranked win for any Canton team in school history since joining Division III and just the second ranked victory for the Roos in women's hockey program history. Canton earned their first win against a ranked opponent last season when they defeated No. 13 Cortland 2-1 in OT on December 6th. She finished with a +1 on-ice rating on the weekend as the Roos split the weekend series with the Bulldogs.
