Kopek, Goergen and Smith Tabbed SUNYAC Women's Ice Hockey Athletes of the Week
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Cortland teammates Drew Kopek and Molly Goergen are the SUNYAC Women's Ice Hockey Athlete and Goaltender of the Week respectively. Oswego's Meagan Smith is the Rookie of the Week.
Kopek played a large role in a 3-0 week for the nationally ninth-ranked Red Dragons, scoring four goals across three games. The sophomore scored two goals and registered an on-ice rating of (+3) in an 8-0 home victory over Chatham on Tuesday evening. She then netted the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over Canton on Friday night, stealing the puck and then ripping a wrist shot into the top corner of the net to give the Red Dragons the win. On Saturday, Kopek sealed Cortland's 5-1 victory with an empty-net goal on her only shot of the game, and also had an on-ice rating of (+2) in the contest.
Goergen had two strong performances in goal for the nationally ninth-ranked Red Dragons, sporting an 1.00 goals against average, a .952 save percentage, and recording two victories in goal. The senior stopped 23 shots in goal for Cortland in a 2-1 overtime victory over Canton on Friday evening, including multiple strong saves to keep Cortland within a goal as the Red Dragons looked to complete the comeback. In a 5-1 win on Saturday, Goergen stopped the final 17 shots she faced in leading Cortland to the win.
On Friday at Potsdam, Smith came up big when it mattered most. She gave the Lakers their largest lead of the night scoring to make the lead 3-1. Then in Overtime, Kyrkostas found Smith in front of the net and Smith buried the shot in the top right to give the Lakers an overtime win with her third goal of the season and second of the night.
