12 SUNYAC Baseball Players earn All-Region Honors
Twelve SUNYAC baseball players were honored today with their selection to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team. Junior Dave Filak and senior Dan Randall of Oneonta earned honors after leading the Red Dragons to its most successful season ever. Brockport senior Nate Parrino (Brockport, NY/Brockport) was a first-team selection in the New York Region. Junior Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) earned third team honors and senior Joe Zaccardo (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) was selected as one of the nine Gold Glove honorees by the organization.
SUNY Cortland had seven players earn recognition led by senior third baseman Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) and junior left fielder Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor). Nickel and Simone were joined by second baseman Matt June (Colonie), junior pitcher Travis Ratliff (Levittown/Division Avenue) and senior catcher Andersen Gardner (Fairport) on the first-team all-region. Gardner was selected as a designated hitter since he played a majority of his games in that spot. Senior center fielder Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was named to the all-region second team and senior right fielder Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was chosen to the third team.
Also, Cortland 11th-year head coach Joe Brown was named the ABCA New York Region Coach of the Year. Brown won the award for the sixth time, with his other honors coming in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008.
Filak had a dominating year as Oneonta’s No. 1 starter. He may be selected on June 7 in the college entry draft for Major League Baseball, which means he has probably pitched his last game in an Oneonta uniform. This spring Filak was 8-1 overall with his only loss coming in the NCAA tournament to Farmingdale. He finished with a career low 2.00 ERA for the year and became the first player in the program’s history to record 100 strikeouts in a season recording 104. Filak allowed only 41 hits in 67-1/3 innings and held opponents to a .171 batting average. In his three years with Oneonta he was 18-5 overall with a 2.63 ERA. He struck out 250 batters in 160-2/3 innings, which is an average of 14 strikeouts per nine innings.
Randall, a second team All-Region selection, was the recipient of the Gold Glove award at first base. Randall becomes the first Oneonta player to receive the Gold Glove honor. Randall led Oneonta in home runs (8), RBIs (41), doubles (13), walks (28), sacrifice flies (7) total bases (95) and slugging percentage (.605). He hit .344 for the season (54-157) and scored 38 runs. As a first baseman, Randall had a fielding percentage of .995. He made only two errors in 377 total chances this spring. Randall started 162 of 165 games played in an Oneonta baseball uniform. He hit .328 for his career with 23 home runs and 140 runs batted in. He collected 44 doubles and scored 123 runs while also collecting 315 total bases. His on-base percentage was .412, which included 67 walks. In the field, Randall had a career fielding percentage of .991. In 756 total chances as a first baseman and right fielder, he made only seven errors.
Parrino led The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 23-18 record, a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship and the programs second NCAA Regional Tournament appearance. Parrino was named the SUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player and was the only Golden Eagle to play in all 41 games. He finished with a .403 batting average with a season record 60 hits, including a team-best 13 doubles. His .544 slugging average and 44 runs batted in ranked second on the team. The first baseman made only two errors and set a new season record for putouts (363) to post an impressive .995 fielding percentage. First-Team selections are eligible for national All-America consideration.
Zimmerman hit .344 with 53 hits and eight homeruns. The junior was recognized as a second team All-SUNYAC selection and made 39 starts. The designated hitter set the season record for RBIs with 47 and broke the career RBI record which now stands at 119. He led the team with a .552 slugging average and 10 hit by pitches.
Zaccardo started 29 games at catcher and recorded 191 putouts with one error and threw out 22 runners attempting to steal. He finished fourth on the team in hitting (.362) with 38 hits, seven doubles and 25 RBIs. The senior set a new record with a 19-game hit streak and was selected to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team.
Nickel has a .443 batting average with a team-high 10 home runs along with three triples, 11 doubles, 53 RBI and 55 runs scored. He shares the team lead in doubles and runs and is second in RBI. Nickel is also 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts and has a team-high .725 slugging percentage.
Simone is batting a team-high .464 with two homers, five triples, 11 doubles and 50 RBI. He has stolen 22 bases in 25 attempts and has struck out only four times in 179 plate appearances. Simone has also scored 38 runs.
June is hitting .409 with two homers, a triple, 10 doubles and 27 RBI. He shares the team lead with 55 runs scored and leads the team with 29 walks. June has a .967 fielding percentage (seven errors in 209 total chances) and has struck out only nine times in 199 plate appearances.
Ratliff is 8-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 10 appearances, all as a starter. In 53 and two-third innings, he has allowed just 48 hits and has fanned 61 batters.
Gardner is batting .398 with eight doubles, six triples, seven homers and 54 RBI. He leads the team in triples and RBI despite playing in only 36 games due to some early-season injuries. Gardner is 5-for-5 on steal attempts and has scored 44 runs.
Khyle Dimino has a .376 batting average with six doubles, two triples, four homers and 30 RBI. He has scored 32 runs and leads the squad with 33 stolen bases in 36 attempts. He is two steals shy of tying the school single-season record.
Adam Dimino, Khyle’s brother, is batting .348 with five doubles, three triples and six home runs. He has driven in 37 runs, is third in the team with 49 runs scored and is a perfect 15-for-15 on stolen base attempts.
