Cortland Top Seed and Host for NCAA Regional
The SUNY Cortland baseball team has received a berth into the 55-team NCAA Division III playoffs for the 18th straight season and the 19th time overall. The Red Dragons (32-8-1) have been chosen as the top seed in an eight-team regional that the Red Dragons are hosting with the Auburn Doubledays at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y.
Cortland will play Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. versus eighth-seeded Castleton State College (32-14). Wednesday’s other games feature fourth-seeded Skidmore (30-13) versus fifth-seeded Keene State (N.H.) (26-15-1) at 10 a.m., third-seeded Oneonta (28-11) versus sixth-seeded Farmingdale State (24-15) at 4:30 p.m. and second-seeded St. John Fisher (28-12) versus seventh-seeded Brockport (23-16) at 7:45 p.m. Tickets each day are $3 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens and must be purchased at the gate.

Tournament action continues with four games on both Thursday and Friday, starting at 10 a.m. each day, along with two games Saturday and one, if necessary, on Sunday. The winner of the double-elimination regional advances to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series, which will be held May 28 – June 1 in Grand Chute, Wis. (near Appleton; south of Green Bay). The World Series will be in Wisconsin for the 11th straight year.
The Red Dragons earned a “Pool C” at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. Cortland won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season title with an 11-1 record, but tied for second in the conference postseason tournament. Brockport was declared the SUNYAC champion and received the league’s NCAA automatic berth with a 2-0 record after weather forced the tournament to be cut short.
Under 11th-year head coach Joe Brown, Cortland reached the 30-win plateau for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons. Cortland’s run of 18 straight NCAA appearances is the longest active streak in Division III.
Cortland has won regional titles in nine of the last 15 years. Cortland advanced to the World Series in 1995 and five straight years from 1997-2001, as well as in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Cortland placed second in the region in 1996, 2003 and 2006. The Red Dragons finished second nationally at the 2005 World Series, third in both 1997 and 1998 and fourth in 2007.
