Briggs and Hughes Garner Weekly Honors from SUNYAC and ECAC
New Paltz sophomore Jimmy Briggs and Cortland junior Mike Hughes have been named both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Upstate New York Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week ending March 11.
BASEBALL PLAYER – New Paltz
Jimmy Briggs (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), sophomore designated hitter
New Paltz sophomore designated hitter Jimmy Briggs batted .643 (9-for-14) for the week across four games, helping the Hawks go 2-2. He also collected six RBI, four doubles and two runs scored. Against SUNY Purchase, Briggs went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in game one before going 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored in the nightcap. On Sunday, he registered at least one hit in a pair of games against The College at Old Westbury, batting 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored in the front end of the doubleheader before going 1-for-3 in the back end of the twinbill.
BASEBALL PITCHER – Cortland
Mike Hughes (Albany, NY/Albany), junior
Hughes went 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two starts. He allowed only five hits and one run and struck out 20 batters in 11 and two-third innings. He fanned nine batters n four and a third innings before being removed due to a pitch count and received the win in a 14-5 victory vs. RIT Monday. On Saturday, he struck out 11 and allowed only four hits and two walks in seven and a third scoreless innings and received a no-decision in a 4-3 win over 16th-ranked Wheaton (Mass.).
