Baseball Award Winners and All-Conference
The State University of New York Athletic Conference has announced the 2012 Baseball year-ending awards and All-Conference teams. SUNY Cortland took the Player and Pitcher of the Year, Oswego garnered the Rookie of the Year and Plattsburgh earned the Coach of the Year. All awards are voted on by the conference coaches.
Cortland junior shortstop John Adornetto (Commack) was named the Bob Wallace Player of the Year. The first-team all-conference selection started all 41 games he has played and is hitting .373 including a .421 average in conference play. He has totaled 47 hits, nine doubles, 24 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
Cortland junior Ray Angelucci (Commack) was named the Don Axtell Pitcher of the Year. Angelucci is 10-1 on the season with a 1.91 earned run average in 11 appearances on the mound. Five of his appearances came against conference competition, where he threw two complete games and recorded one solo shutout while combining for another. To date, Angelucci has allowed 36 hits in 68.1 innings, holding opponents to a .157 battering average. The first-team all-conference selection has thrown 58 strikeouts.
Adornetto and Angelucci have been key factors in Cortland’s 35-7-1 record. The Red Dragons won their 30th league title on May 6th to earn the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. Cortland will bring an 18-game winning streak into their 20th consecutive NCAA appearance.
John Rauseo (Mattituck), a freshman outfielder, was selected as the Clark V. Whited Rookie of the Year. The second-team All-conference selection registered a .343 batting average and a .520 slugging percentage, which was fifth best in the conference, on six doubles, three triples, and two home runs. He tied for first on the Oswego squad with 28 runs and tied for second with 21 RBI. Defensively, Rauseo was perfect in the outfield as he did not record an error in 56 chances (52 putouts and four assists). He is the first Laker to be named Rookie of the Year since 2004 when Mike Cortellini earned the award.
After guiding Plattsburgh to a 22-17 record overall and a 9-9 mark in the SUNYAC Kris Doorey was named the recipient of the 2012 Walter Nitardy Coach of the Year. This year’s award marks the third time Doorey has been recognized by the conference. With Doorey at the helm, the Cardinals returned to the SUNYAC Tournament as the fourth-seed after missing postseason play in 2011.
