SUNYAC announces player of the week for the week of March 9-15
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces Athletes of the Week for spring sport action during the week of March 9-15.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mark DeMilio (SR) DeMilio
Cortland (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla)
DeMilio batted .350 (7-for-20) with a homer, two doubles, two walks, five RBI and nine runs scored in a 5-0 week for the #3 Red Dragons. He also handled 21 chances at second base without an error. DeMilio singled in the winning run with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-1 comeback win over Endicott in the first game of a doubleheader. He also finished 2-for-4 with a double, homer, two RBI and three runs in a 14-12 win over #16 Marietta. His two-run homer provided what proved to be the winning runs.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Charles Arcuri (SO)
Oswego (Monroe, N.Y./Washingtonville)
Arcuri pitched five innings Saturday night against Framingham, helping Oswego secure the win in its first game at the RussMatt Florida Invitational. The sophomore allowed no hits in his second game of the season, striking out 10 along the way. Arcuri picked up his first win of the year as well.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Meg Brewer (SR)
New Paltz (Bayport, N.Y./ Bayport-Blue Point)
New Paltz senior third baseman Meg Brewer hit .667 (6-for-9) and fashioned a 1.000 slugging percentage with six RBI, three doubles and two runs scored in a 2-0 week for the Hawks at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Brewer batted 2-for-4 in the team's season opener on Sunday morning against Eureka College, driving in two runs while finishing with a double and a run scored. Versus Keystone College in the team's second game of the day, she went 4-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles and a run scored. New Paltz (2-0) next plays a tripleheader on Monday, facing Spalding (Ky.) University twice and the College of Mount Saint Vincent once.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Jaime Berger (JR)
Brockport (Norwich, N.Y. / Norwich)
Jaime Berger has had a stellar start to her season, securing two wins for The College at Brockport. Berger helped Brockport salvage its first day of games in Florida with a win in the second game as she struck out 13 batters -- a new career high. She allowed no runs over eight innings pitched in a 1-0 victory over Geneva. Against St. Joseph, Berger again shut down the opposition allowing no runs over seven innings pitched while striking out nine in a 7-0 win.
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Zach Hopps (JR)
Cortland (Akwesasne, N.Y./ Massena)
Hopps scored 10 points on four goals and six assists in a 1-1 week for the sixth-ranked Red Dragons (2-2). In a 12-11 setback against #2 RIT at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, Hopps tallied five points on three goals and two assists and added a ground ball. He then compiled five points on one goal and four assists in an 11-9 win at Western New England on Saturday. In that game, he assisted on the game-winning goal. For the season, Hopps leads Cortland in goals (10), assists (9) and points (19).
MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Ryan Adler (SO)
Oneonta ( Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown West)
In its only game of the week, Adler stood solid in goal, making 23 saves to lead Oneonta to a 5-4 win against #20 Nazareth College. Adler is currently 3-2 and has a save percentage of .677.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Tara Monaghan (JR)
Cortland ( Stony Point, N.Y./ North Rockland
Monaghan helped lead the thiurd-ranked Red Dragons to a pair on non-conference wins to start the season. In a season-opening 19-10 victory at home versus Union, Monaghan tallied a career-high six goals and added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. In a 14-10 win at #1 Gettysburg on Saturday, she tallied three goals and one assist and also contributed five ground balls, one caused turnover and four draws. With her four points, Monaghan became the 39th player in program history to reach 100 career points (86-15-101). For the two games, she totaled 10 points on nine goals and one assist, eight ground balls, four caused turnovers and nine draws.
