Savlov's goal lifts #10 Cortland men's lacrosse past Springfield
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Matt Savlov (Liverpool) scored the game-winning goal with 8:57 remaining in the fourth quarter to give nationally 10th-ranked Cortland a 9-8 victory over Springfield College Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cortland improves its record to 15-4 and will host Endicott, who defeated Colorado College 12-6, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Savlov finished with three goals and an assist, senior Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) netted two goals and recorded two assists and seniors Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy), Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and Billy Davis (Manhasset) tallied a score and an assist each. Senior Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) added a goal and classmate Dan Southard (Onondaga) recorded an assist. Â

Senior goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) registered 6 saves for Cortland. Junior Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 13-of-21 faceoffs, collected a game-high 10 ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Senior Bryce Serriello (Cape Cod, MA/Barnstable) led the Pride with 3 goals, freshman Tom Hurley (Goffstown, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored twice, junior Brendan Boss (West Springfield, MA), senior Kevin Sainte (Lexington, MA/Belmont) and junior Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) tallied a goal each and senior Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa) added two assists.
Sophomore goalie Chris Santaniello (West Springfield, MA) made 11 saves for Springfield. Senior Mark Gonzalez (Tolland, CT/East Catholic) won 8-of-21 faceoffs and senior Matt Dalton (Somers) picked up five ground balls.
Cortland jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Davis and Hopps scored early goals for the Red Dragons, followed by a goal from Sainte for the Pride and then Rakoczy and Savlov scored one more each for Cortland. Springfield then scored four unanswered goals while holding Cortland scoreless for a stretch of 25:28. The Pride received two goals from Serriello, one from Laguerre and a score from Boss. Springfield led 5-4 at the break.
Cortland broke the scoring drought early on in the third quarter when Dunlavey scored with 11:53 remainging and Savlov added another under a minute later to help regain the lead. Serriello scored for Springfield to even the score once again, then Cantelli answered right back to give Cortland the advantage. Hurley scored the final two goals of the third quarter for Springfield with the second coming with just four seconds remaining to give the Pride an 8-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Dunlavey tied the score with 13:18 left to play and Savlov scored the game winner for the Red Dragons.
With 3:01 to play, Santaniello made a key save on a Cortland shot, but just seconds later Springfield turned the ball back over to Cortland. While the Pride attempted to regain possession, a player commited a one-minute slashing penalty with 1:17 to play and the Red Dragons sealed the victory by holding onto the ball for the remainder of the game.
