SUNYAC announces 2015 men's lacrosse awards
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the 2015 Men's Lacrosse all-conference teams as well as the coach, player and rookie of the year awards as voted on by the conference coaches. The Player of the Year was given to Zach Hopps (Akwesasne, NY), of Cortland, the Rookie of the Year was awarded to Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y.), of Potsdam and the Paul Rose Coach of the Year selection was Steve Beville of Cortland.
Zach Hoops took the Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year honors for the 2015 campaign. The junior attacker tallied 67 points on 35 goals and 32 assists in 18 games, helping Cortland to a 14-4 and 6-0 conference record. Hopps led the Cortland squad to the SUNYAC tournament title and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Potsdam's Eric Soderquist took home the Rookie of the Year award for 2015. The freshman notched a team leading 40 points for the Bears program, with 25 goals and 15 assists. The Watertown, NY native posted a .610 shots on goal percentage for his rookie campaign, helping the program to 4-0 home record and a 3-3 conference mark (7-8 overall).
Coach Beville is in his ninth season as the Red Dragon head coach. He currently holds a 156-26 record and will be leading this year's squad into the NCAA tournament and the program's ninth time under his tenure. He captured the SUNYAC title for the eighth time this past weekend, with a 14-12 victory over Plattsburgh. In his previous eighth years at Cortland, Beville has led the program to four national title game appearances, winning it all in 2009.
