SUNYAC announces awards for the week of Feb. 1-7
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected 13 award winners for their outstanding performances during the week of Feb. 1-7.Â
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brian Sortino (JR) Â
Oswego, Guard (Fairport/Fairport)
Brian Sortino played 115 minutes for the Lakers this week, playing a key offensive role as the Lakers went 2-1 in conference play. The senior averaged 23.3 points per game over the stretch, scoring 70 total. Sortino shot 49.0% (24-for-49) from the field and held a 31.3% (5-16) from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe, Sortino added to his SUNYAC-high made free throws, sinking 17. Not only was the Fairport, N.Y. native a scorer but he also led the team in assists over the week with 14.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK -  Britt Perry (SR)
Buffalo State, Guard(Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech)
Britt Perry paced the Bengals to a pair of SUNYAC road victories over the weekend, averaging 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals. The senior guard netted 23 points to go with six rebounds in a 63-60 win at Cortland on Friday, and then had 22 points and nine rebounds in a 67-66 win at Oswego on Saturday, including hitting the game-winning free throw with seven seconds remaining.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Connor Gorman (SR) Â
Plattsburgh, Forward (Shrewsbury, Mass./New Hampshire Monarchs)
Connor Gorman had four point weekend on two goals and two assists. On Friday night against rival Oswego, he scored twice including the game-winner with two seconds left in overtime to complete a 4-3 comeback over the Lakers. Saturday the senior forward picked up two primary assists against Cortland in a 6-1 win.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Brendan McMenimen (SO)
Potsdam, Goalie (Merrimack, Mass./Islander Hockey Club)
Brendan McMenimen guided the Bears to a 1-0-1 SUNYAC weekend with a 1.92 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage. On Friday night, he stopped 26 shots in a 3-3 tie with Cortland. The following evening, McMenimen stopped 30 shots as the Bears completed a season sweep of Oswego and clinched a playoff spot with a 2-1 win.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Bobby Polachek (FR)
Fredonia, Forward (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary)
A freshman from Kingston, Pa., Polachek had a six-point weekend in a pair of games vs. SUNY Canton. He had a goal and four assists in Fredonia's 7-2 win on Friday, and assisted on the Blue Devils' lone goal in Saturday's 2-1 loss. The output made Polachek the top scorer among Fredonia freshmen. He has 19 points -- five goals and 14 assists.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Claudia Kolakowski (JR) Â
Geneseo (Highland Mills, N.Y./Highland Mills)
Claudia Kolakowski swept both diving events as the Knights finished first out of five teams at the Geneseo Invitational, Saturday, in a field that included Oswego, Buffalo State and Brockport. She won the 3-meter (6 dives) with a score of 290.20 while her 1-meter (11 dives) score of 447.15 was also tops.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Sam Rokos (SR) Â
Fredonia (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg)
A senior from Delanson, N.Y., Rokos was a triple winner for the second straight meet. She touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.17), the 100-yard freestyle (:55.58), and the 50-yard freestyle (:25.20) during Fredonia's home loss to Cortland. Rokos won the 100 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, and the 200 individual medley Jan. 30 at Brockport.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Arron Carlson (JR)
Fredonia (LeRoy, N.Y./Notre Dame)
Arron Carlson Was a double winner Saturday during the Blue Devils' home win over Cortland, 163-134. Both his winning scores are NCAA zone qualifying efforts for six dives: 301.75 points in the 1-meter, 348.75 points in the 3-meter.Â
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Reeve Callen (SR)
Cortland (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego)
Reeve Callen captured two individual events and anchored two winning relays during Cortland's dual-meet loss at Fredonia Saturday. He posted winning times of 21.64 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 47.89 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. He swam the freestyle leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:38.24) and the final leg on the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.48).
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kaitlyn Kieser (SR) Â
Oneonta (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke)
Kaitlyn Kieser won both the triple and long jump setting a school record in the latter. Her record leap in the long jump covered 5.75 meters (18'10 ½"), which broke the old mark by 5 ½" set last year by teammate Kayla Clohessy. Kieser nearly eclipsed her personal best mark in the triple jump, as she won the event with a distance of 11.25 meters (36'10 ½"). Her mark in the long jump has moved her into No. 2 nationally in Division III.

FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Laura Morrison (SR) Â
Fredonia (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield)
Laura Morrison continued her indoor success by setting the school indoor and Brockport SERC collegiate record in the 800 meters. Her winning time of 2:12.05 which is No. 2 nationally in Division III, came Saturday during the Brockport Mid-Season Classic. She was also part of Fredonia's winning 4-by-400 meter relay team at Saturday's meet. Morrison broke Fredonia's indoor mile record in each of the previous two meets.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jack Flood (JR) Â
Cortland (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point)
Jack Flood broke his own school record in the heptathlon with a winning score of 5,054 points at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational and Multi. He currently ranks first nationally in Div. III. Flood recorded three ECAC qualifiers during the competition with a long jump of 6.85 meters (22' 5.75"), a high jump of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"), and a 60-meter hurdle time of 8.56 seconds.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Isaac Garcia-Cassani (SO) Â
Geneseo (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North)
Isaac Garcia-Cassani took the crown in the mile run to lead the Knights at Tuft's Cupid Challenge, Saturday. Garcia-Cassani crossed the finish line in a time of 4:14.68 to move into 14th place in Division III.
