SUNYAC athletes of the week selected for the week of Feb. 8-14
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its athletes of the week going into the last week of regular season competition for winter sports. Swimming and diving athletes are preparing for the SUNYAC championships this week in Buffalo, N.Y., Feb. 17-20
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brian Sortino (JR)
Oswego, Guard (Fairport/Fairport)
Sortino was Oswego's key offensive factor this week as the Lakers went 3-0 against SUNYAC opponents. The junior averaged 24.3 points between the three games, scoring 73 points in total. On Saturday, in the victory over No. 22 Plattsburgh, Sortino scored a career-high 38 points. From beyond the arc, Sortino shot .524 (11-for-21) and from the field .436 (24-for-55). Over the course of the three games, the Fariport, N.Y. native not only shot the ball well but also played the role of distributor. He dished out 16 assists compared to only four turnovers and tied a season-high seven assists against Plattsburgh.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Jenna Einink (FR) Â
Fredonia, Forward (Mayville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake)
In a pair of SUNYAC wins, Einink came off the Blue Devil bench to average 22.5 points -- same as senior teammate Sabrina Macaulay -- while improving her season average to 12.5 points per game. Her best work came in the fourth quarter at Brockport. Down by six to open the quarter, the Blue Devils erupted for 35 points. Einink had 13 of those points, plus two rebounds, four assists, and one steal. She finished with 19 points in 18 minutes of duty. Against Buffalo State, Einink was credited with 26 points and 11 rebounds -- her fifth double-double of the season.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Taylor Pryce (JR) Â
Buffalo State, Forward (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal CarterO)
 Pryce tallied seven points in a pair of victories that helped Buffalo State secure a SUNYAC playoff berth for a sixth-consecutive season. He had a pair of assists in a 3-2 overtime win over Geneseo on Friday, including a helper on the game winner. Pryce then netted two goals to go with three assists as the Bengals erased an early 2-0 deficit in a 7-3 win at Brockport on Saturday. He leads the Bengals with 13 goals and 27 points in 23 games this season.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Spencer Finney (SR) Â
Plattsburgh, Goalie (Pontypool, Ontario/Colgate University)
Spencer Finney only allowed one goal in the Plattsburgh 2-1 win over North Country rival Potsdam Saturday night. Finney made 30 saves including 11 in third period to preserve the one goal lead. The Pontypool, Ontario native finished the night with a .968 save percentage.Â
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Mac Wood (FR) Â
Buffalo State, Forward (Simcoe, ON/SCS)
Wood scored a goal in each of Buffalo State's wins over the weekend, helping the Bengals secure a SUNYAC playoff berth for the sixth-consecutive season. Wood scored the first goal in Friday 3-2 overtime win over Geneseo, and also scored his eighth of the season on Saturday, helping the Bengals erase an early 2-0 deficit in a 7-3 win at Brockport on Saturday.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Alayana Mlodozeniec (JR) Â
Geneseo (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia)
Mlodozeniec swept the 100 freestyle (54.12) and the 200 freestyle (1:58.87) to lead the Knights during the Ithaca Invitational on Saturday.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Derek Secord (SO) Â
Geneseo (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport)
Secord swept the 50 freestyle (21.47) and the 100 freestyle (47.62) to lead the Knights during the Ithaca Invitational on Saturday.Â
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Treasure Glymph (SR) Â
Buffalo State (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman)
Glymph helped lead Buffalo State to the title at the 15-team Baldwin Wallace Mid February meet, winning the triple jump with a mark of 11.11 meters and was second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.68), and third in the high jump (1.60m).
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Alyssa Drapeau (SR) Â
Oneonta (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake)
Drapeau shaved nearly 11 seconds off the old mark in the 5000 meters in setting a school record at the St. Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University. She is ranked 10th nationally in the event with her time of 17:19.61.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Mitch Couch (JR) Â
Cortland (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta)
Couch set a school record in the weight throw with his winning distance of 17.29 meters (56' 8.75") at the Cornell University Sunday Invitational. His performance currently ranks him 13th nationally in Division III. Couch also finished fourth in the shot put at 14.48 meters (47' 6.25"). Both of his performances are ECAC qualifiers.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Isaac Garcia-Cassani (SO)
Geneseo (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North)
Isaac Garcia-Cassani ran the second-fastest mile in school history at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University, Saturday, in a field that consisted of Division I competitors. Garcia-Cassani completed the mile in a time of 4:09.89 to move into second place all-time at Geneseo and 11th in Division III.
