SUNYAC selects top athletes for performances during the week of Sept. 21-27
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces athletes of the week for the week of Sept. 21-27. All SUNYAC teams are now into their conference schedules and are looking to win a spot in the 2015 championships.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Kyle Collins (SR)
Fredonia (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern)
Kyle Collins finished fourth overall Sept. 26 at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College. His 25:33.9 for 8,000 meters was his best this season and his second-best as a collegian. He led the Blue Devils to a third-place finish out of a field of 24 teams. The Blue Devils entered the meet ranked No. 9 in NCAA's Atlantic Region.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Laura Morrison (SR)
Fredonia (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield)
Laura Morrison, a track athlete competing in her first season of collegiate cross country, finished sixth Saturday, September 26, at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College. Her time of 18:40.2 for 5,000 meters is her best time at the distance as a Blue Devil -- approximately 33 seconds faster than her previous-best. It is also the third-fastest 5K time in program history. Morrison led her team to a second-place finish in a field of 20 teams.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Amy Masciale (SO)
Brockport, Forward (Selden, N.Y./Newfield)
Amy Masciale scored four goals in a game as the Golden Eagles won its first conference game of the season, 6-3 over Morrisville State College. The four goals ties a school record for most goals in a game. Masciale started the game with high energy, tallying her first goal in the 5th minute of play and scoring another nearly two minutes later. Brockport took a 3-2 lead to halftime, with two of first half goals coming from Masciale. Masciale tacked on two more goals in the second half just four minutes apart. The sophomore forward tallied eight shots throughout the game with six of them being on goal.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kailynne Reinoehl (FR)
Cortland, Goalkeeper (Lititz, PA/Warwick)
Kailynne Reinoehl posted a 2-0 record in SUNYAC play with 13 saves, a 1.000 save percentage and a 0.00 GAA last week for the Red Dragons. In a 3-0 win versus Oneonta on Friday, Reinoehl recorded four saves in earning her third shutout of the season. She followed up with her fourth shutout on nine saves, including two stops on penalty strokes, as Cortland (5-2, 2-0 SUNYAC) knocked off nationally 17th-ranked New Paltz, 1-0, on Saturday. For the season, Reinoehl has a 5-2 record with a .909 save percentage and a 0.70 GAA.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jason Gonzalez (SR)
New Paltz, Forward (Woodside, NY/St. Francis Prep)
New Paltz senior forward Jason Gonzalez was a key component in the Hawks' victories over Bard College and SUNY Cortland this past week, as New Paltz went 2-1 on the week. Gonzalez assisted the Hawks' first goal to push ahead 1-0 over Bard before beating the goalkeeper to net the game-winner and seal a 2-1 win for New Paltz on Wednesday. In the SUNYAC opener against Cortland on Friday, Gonzalez scored New Paltz's two goals to lift the Hawks to their 2-1 win over the Red Dragons, defeating Cortland for the first time in six years. Gonzalez capped off his week by taking one shot in the team's 2-1 loss to SUNY Oswego on Saturday. New Paltz (6-2-0, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) returns home to face Union (N.Y.) College on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m.
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Casey Sullivan (SR)
Brockport, Goalkeeper (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa)
Casey Sullivan totaled 15 saves and only allowed two goals in 230 minutes played last week. The senior goalkeeper had five saves against Buffalo State on Friday and proved to be resilient with 10 saves against Fredonia on Saturday with several game-saving plays including a stop made on a penalty kick in the second overtime to preserve a Brockport tie.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Anissa Hartmann (JR)
Plattsburgh, Forward (Fairfax, Vt./BFA Fairfax)
Anissa Hartmann kept her scoring streak going on Tuesday against Middlebury in a 2-1 victory. Hartmann netted the equalizer in the 73rd minute to make it 1-1. before also scoring the game-winner in double overtime. At the time, those two goals gave Hartmann six goals in the past four games including two consecutive game-winners. Hartmann now leads the SUNYAC in both goals (7) and points (14).
WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gabrianna Boldinski (SR)
Buffalo State, Defense (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East)
The center back played stifling defense that had an integral role in three-consecutive shutout victories over stiff competition in Case Western, Brockport and Geneseo. The Bengals yielded a total of just eight shots on goal in the three wins. Boldinski, a senior criminal justice major, also jumped up in the box and scored the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over Geneseo on a set piece when she headed a ball served from a corner kick into the back of the net.
TENNIS SINGLES PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mako Tanaka (FR) (Tokyo, Japan/Keio Academy (N.Y.)
Geneseo
Mako Tanaka went undefeated this week with a record of 6-0. She went 2-0 against her Oneonta and New Paltz opponents. Tanaka stood out this week at the 2015 USTA/ITA Division III Women's North East Regional Championship where she had a perfect record of 4-0.
TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK – Cat Crummey, SR (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and Marylen Santos, SR (Jamaica, N.Y./St. Francis Prep)
Geneseo
Cat Crummey and Marylen Santos put together a 7-0 record over the week as they defeated both New Paltz and Oneonta. They also went 5-0 at the 2015 USTA/ITA Division III Women's North East Regional Championship.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Becca Borquist (SR)
New Paltz, Outside Hitter (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck)
New Paltz senior outside hitter Becca Borquist averaged 4.62 kills per set and hit .245 (60-21-159) in a 3-0 week for the Hawks at the first SUNYAC Pool Play of the season. In addition, she averaged 4.00 digs per set, 0.85 service aces per set and 0.31 blocks per set. She floored 23 kills and added 15 digs, three service aces and three blocks, as New Paltz edged SUNY Fredonia, 3-2, on Friday in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC title match. On Saturday, she hit .308 (16-4-39) and chipped in with 14 digs and six service aces in the Hawks' 3-1 win over SUNY Potsdam before posting 21 kills, 23 digs, two service aces in a block in the team's 3-1 triumph over SUNY Geneseo. On the year, she leads the SUNYAC in kills per set (4.48) and ranks among the conference leaders in service aces per set (0.59, second) and hitting percentage (.270, eighth).
