SUNYAC announces athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 5-11
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selects top athletes for the week of Oct. 5-11. Eight athletes from six institutions have been honored for their outstanding performances last week.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Mary Baughman (JR)
Cortland (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta)
Mary Baughman was fourth overall, and the top Div. III runner, in a field of 181 at the Hamilton College Invitational. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 17:35.5 and helped Cortland finished second of 14 schools, behind only Div. II East Stroudsburg, in the final team standings.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Mitch Ryan (JR)
Cortland (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic)
Mitch Ryan finished 10th in a field of 173 runners at the Hamilton College Invitational. He posted a time of 26:13.0 over 8,000 meters, and his effort helped Cortland finish third of 15 in the final team standings.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Cara Stafford (SO)
Geneseo, Forward (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay)
Cara Stafford scored the first two hat-tricks of her collegiate career in back-to-back victories for the Knights last week. One Wednesday, she accounted for all of Geneseo's scoring in a 3-2 victory at Nazareth before logging three goals and an assist in a 7-1 victory over visiting Keuka on Saturday. She currently leads the SUNYAC with 11 goals and 1.00 goals per game.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alexis Archilla
Plattsburgh, Forward (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley HS)
Alexis Archilla was a huge presence for the Cardinals in helping secure two wins against New Paltz and Oneonta over the weekend. The Warwick Valley product netted all five Cardinal goals on Friday against New Paltz and now leads the SUNYAC in goals with 13. He also tops the charts in goals per game in the SUNYAC as well.
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Casey Sullivan (SR)
Brockport, Goalkeeper (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa)
Casey Sullivan added two more shutouts to his record last week. In two night games, Sullivan had eight saves in a crucial 1-0 conference victory over Geneseo Saturday after already posting a seven save shutout performance against nonconference opponent Houghton Tuesday in a 2-0 win.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Breanna Knight (SO)
Buffalo State, Midfielder (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South)
The sophomore midfielder scored a pair of goals in a three-win week as Buffalo State extended its winning streak to a school-record nine games. Knight netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Allegheny, helped limit Cortland to just four shots on goal in another 1-0 victory, and then scored her third goal of the season in a 3-2 win at Oswego on Saturday.

Fredonia, Goalkeeper (Depew, N.Y/: Lancaster)
The lone goalkeeper on the Blue Devil roster, Owczarzak recorded back-to-back SUNYAC shutouts at Oswego (0-0 tie Friday) and at Cortland (1-0 win Saturday). She made nine saves in each game and ended the week with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .792 save percentage with three shutouts.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kayla Barber (SR)
Brockport, Outside Hitter (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls)
Kayla Barber helped lead the Golden Eagles to four victories last week, including three SUNYAC matches to improve Brockport's conference record to 6-0. Barber totaled 63 kills, six aces and 21 digs over the week, saving her best against Fredonia with 19 kills and 10 digs to help the Green and Gold to a 3-1 victory.
