2013 SUNYAC Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams and Individual Awards Announced
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to announce the men's basketball Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference Teams for the 2012-2013 season. These awards are voted upon by the men's basketball conference coaches.
Hayden Ward (Montauk, NY/East Hampton High School) from Oswego State was named Player of the Year, Deveino McRae (Bronx, NY / Archbishop Stepinac) from SUNY New Paltz earned Rookie of the Year, and SUNY Cortland's Tom Spanbauer was voted Coach of the Year.
Ward has been voted Player of the Year for the 2012-2013 season. Hayden Ward is a senior business administration major at Oswego. Ward was named SUNYAC men's basketball Player of the Week twice this season (12/3/12 & 12/10/12). He earned one Player of the Week award after becoming the 16th Laker in SUNY Oswego men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark. After his success this season, he is second in most rebounds in team history (892), ninth in points (1,393), and eighth in rebounding average (8.35). He ranks 22nd in NCAA Division III for double doubles with 13. He led the SUNYAC conference in rebounding with 272 rebounds and was sixth in scoring (509).
McRae of SUNY New Paltz was named Rookie of the Year by conference coaches. This season he was 18th in the SUNYAC for blocked shots (9). Deveino McRae was also 10th in rebounding with 155 rebounds. He accumulated 198 points during his rookie season where he played in 25 games with 23 starts. McRae is studying biology at New Paltz.
Cortland's Spanbauer earned coach of the year after he led his team to a successful 2012-2013 season. This season the Red Dragons had a 15-3 conference record and overall record of 23-4. The Red Dragons were undefeated at home (12-0). Their 23 victories this season are tied for third-best in Red Dragon men's basketball history. The Red Dragons were ranked first in the SUNYAC for scoring margin with 13.8, first in scoring defense with 1746 points, averaging 64.7, and third for scoring offense with 2118, averaging 78.4.
In addition to their regular season success, the Red Dragons won the men's SUNYAC championship for the first time in 13 seasons. They played Plattsburgh State in the SUNYAC finals, winning 75-61. Cortland was ranked first in the conference throughout the majority of the season.
Tom Spanbauer has been head coach at SUNY Cortland for 18 seasons. This is Spanbauer's fifth time being named Coach of the Year. He previously earned the award for leading the Red Dragons to NCAA Division III "Sweet 16" appearances in 1999 and 2000. Spanbauer previously won Coach of the Year for the 1996-1997, 1998-1999, 2000-2001, and 2005-2006 seasons.
The Cortland Red Dragons earned a spot in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament this season. They automatically qualified for the national tournament after winning the SUNYAC men's basketball title. They are currently ranked second in the NCAA East region and will host Elms College (Mass.) at Cortland for the opening round. This will be the fifth time SUNY Cortland has made an appearance in the Division III NCAA tournament. The last time they advanced to the tournament was in 2006. The game is set for March 2nd, 2013 at 4pm at SUNY Cortland.
