Two SUNYAC Men's Basketball Athletes Earn Spots on D3hoops.com National â??Team of the Weekâ??
Buffalo State senior guard Jake Simmons (Rochester, NY) and SUNY Cortland senior guard Jeremy Smith (Bronx) have been selected to the D3hoops.com national men’s basketball “Team of the Week,” presented by Scoutware, for the week ending Jan. 20. The team represents the best five Division III players from all schools, by position, during the previous week’s action.
Simmons averaged 30.0 points in two games, including finishing one point shy of matching career best with 42 points against Fredonia. Simmons was 14 of 19 shooting for the game, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range. He shot 56-percent from the field for the week and 60-percent from behind the arc.
Buffalo State’s all-time leading scorer, he is averaging 19.6 points-per-game this season and is on pace to go over 2,000 points for his career.
Smith averaged 29 points and shot 72 percent from the field in two Cortland victories. He scored 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting (3-of-8 three-pointers) in a 79-73 win Friday versus league leader Geneseo. The following night, he scored 35 points, two shy of his career high, and hit 14-of-18 shots (4-of-8 three-pointers) in a 102-83 win at Brockport.
Through the end of last week’s action, Smith ranked second on the Red Dragon squad this winter with 14.6 points and 2.9 assists per game. He shares the team lead with 35 three-pointers and is the team leader in free throw percentage at 83 percent (38-of-46). Cortland (12-3) will play at Oneonta on Tuesday night, Jan. 22.
