NABC Recognizes Four from SUNYAC
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has announced the 2013 NABC Division III All-District Teams and Coaches. Cortland's Tom Spanbauer has been named the Division III Coach of the Year for the East. Three State University of New York Athleteic Conference (SUNYAC) athletes have been named to the first and second All-District Teams. Oswego State's Hayden Ward (Montauk, NY) and Cortland State's Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre, NY) were selected to the first team while Buffalo State's Jake Simmons (Rochester,NY) has earned second team honors. Student-athletes and coaches were selected by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division III.
Tom Spanbauer earned the honor of Coach of the Year for the East. Spanbauer led the Cortland Red Dragons to a 24-5 season record, which tied for the school record. The Red Dragons led the SUNYAC in scoring defense (64.6) and ranked third in scoring offense (78.1). Spanbauer also coached his team to their first SUNYAC Men's Basketball Title since 2000. Cortland made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. They capped off the season placing 17th nationally.
Spanbauer completed his 18th season as SUNY Cortland's head men's basketball coach this year. He is Cortland's career leader in men's basketball victories with an 18-year record of 306-193. Spanbauer has been voted the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) East Region Coach of the Year twice before in 1999 and 2000. Those same years, he was also named New York State Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year after leading the Red Dragons to NCAA Division III Sweet 16 playoff appearances during both 1999 and 2000 seasons. Spanbauer has been voted SUNYAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year five times, one of those times being this year.
Oswego State's Hayden Ward has been named First Team All-District. The Oswego Laker was recently crowned SUNYAC 2013 Player of the year, along with being named a SUNYAC All-Conference First Team member and D3hoops.com 2013 Men's All-East Region First Team member. Ward led the SUNYAC in rebounding, averaging 9.7 rebounds per game. He was sixth in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game. He capped off his collegiate career second in career rebounds(892) for Oswego state and top-ten on the career scoring list (1,393).

In addition to this achievement, Winter was recently named a 2013 SUNYAC First Team All-Conference memeber and a D3hoops.com 2013 Men's All-East First Team athlete. Winter helped Cortland tie its school record for wins (24-5) and win its first SUNYAC men's basketball title since 2000. He also led Cortland to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournamenet, where they tied for 17th nationally. This season he averaged 15.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. Winter closed his career as Cortland's career scoring leader with 1,525 points.

Simmons led the SUNYAC with 21.4 points per game and 3-pointers per game (2.8). During his time at Buffalo State, Simmons has set records for 3-pointers (321), steals (234), and became the first player to eclipse 2,000 career points (2,079).
