LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward RJ Burns scored a goal but it was Wisconsin-Stevens Point earning a 5-1 victory over the Knights in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament, Friday, at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point (23-5-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period the proved insurmountable as the Knights (20-5-6) were eliminated in the semifinals for the second time in the last three years.
Four minutes and thirty seconds into the game, Steven Point junior forward Jono Davis circled in front of the Knights' goal from the left wing and snapped a wrist shot past Geneseo first-year goalie Devin McDonald to open the scoring. First-year forward Tanner Karty finished off a three-on-one break after a Geneseo turnover at the point at 11:20 before senior forward Drew Graves took a feed from the right boards on a Pointers' break and scored on a low shot with 4:10 remaining for the three-goal edge after 20 minutes.
In the second period, Stevens Point took a 4-0 lead after Junior forward Eliot Grauer tipped a pass from the low slot inside the left post at the 8:16 mark.
Geneseo got on the board with 1:18 left in the period after fighting off 54 seconds of a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Pointers. First-year forward Brodie Tutton was released from the box as Geneseo started an odd-man break into the Stevens Point zone. Burns took a feed from Tutton and buried a short-handed flip inside the left post to pull the Knights within three after two periods of play.
However, it was Stevens Point moving on to their third-consecutive national title game, tacking on another goal by Grauer off a Knights' turnover at the 12:26 mark to put the game away. The Pointers finished the game with a 30-12 advantage in shots as McDonald was credited with 25 saves.
