Seven athletes honored with SUNYAC weekly awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its winter athletes of the week for the week of December 28 - January 3. Seven athletes from four different institutions were honored.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Hamed Shamseldin (SO) Â
Brockport, Guard (Lawrence, N.Y./Lawrence)
Hamed Shamseldin averaged 24 points, shot 46.6 percent (14-30) from the field, and dished out two assists per contest in a week that saw the Golden Eagles finish 1-1. In a triple overtime win against Bridgewater State University on Dec. 28, Shamseldin scored a career high 31 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. The sophomore also picked up four rebounds, two assists and one block in the contest. Shamseldin netted 17 points the following day, in a tough loss to No. 10 ranked John Carroll University. The Lawrence, N.Y. native also added two assists and one rebounds in the loss.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sabrina Macaulay (SR) Â
Fredonia, Forward (Newark, N.Y./Newark)
Fredonia upped its record to 7-2 on Dec. 30th with a win over Pitt-Bradford behind a career night from senior Sabrina Macaulay. She scored a career-high 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting (67 percent). Currently, Macaulay ranks third nationally with a 68.6 field-goal percentage. Macaulay also reached a career high with 19 rebounds, 17 coming on the defensive end. For the season, Macaulay is averaging 17.6 ppg and 8.4 rpg.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Aimee Del Favero (JR) Â
New Paltz, Free (Auburn, N.Y./Home School)
New Paltz junior Aimee Del Favero swam on three relays that placed among the top four at the St. Pete's Classic on Sunday, helping the Hawks finish fourth out of six in the final team standings. Del Favero split a 25.48 anchoring New Paltz's fourth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:44.51) before splitting a 2:05.44 200 freestyle on the Hawks' third-place 500 freestyle relay (5:04.97). She closed out the meet leading off New Paltz's fourth-place 400 freestyle relay (3:53.91) with a 57.73 split. The Hawks return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, at SUNY Cortland.

New Paltz, Sprint Free (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley)
Senior Will Koenig participated on three relays that finished among the top three at the St. Pete's Classic on Sunday, helping the Hawks finish third out of five in the final team standings. Koenig uncorked a 21.29 anchor leg on New Paltz's event-winning 200 freestyle relay (1:30.06) before charting a 56.96 split on the Hawks' third-place 300 butterfly relay (2:51.76). He closed out the meet by splitting a 21.25 anchoring New Paltz's second-place 200 medley relay (1:41.79). The Hawks return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, at SUNY Cortland.

Brockport, Forward (Williamstown, Mass./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack (EHL))
Ryan Kangas was named the Codfish Bowl's Most Valuable Player after scoring three goals and three assists including the game winning goal Saturday to take down nationally ranked #5 UMASS Boston. Saturday night in a tie game with overtime looming, Kangas received a pass at the right face off circle and rifled a shot to the top shelf to give Brockport a 3-2 lead with 1:21 remaining. The Williamstown, Mass. native also scored the first goal of the game less than four minutes in. In Sunday's 5-1 championship win, Kangas netted one goal and picked up an assist on another less than seven minutes into the game. The sophomore also picked up an assist on a power play goal in the second period.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Pat Egan (FR) Â
Plattsburgh, Forward (Rochester, N.Y.)
Pat Egan was huge in a 2-0-0 weekend that concluded with the #3 ranked Cardinals winning the W.B. Mason Winter Classic. Egan tallied three goals in the two games en route to receiving tournament MVP honors.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Jared Lockhurst (SR) Â
Brockport, Goaltender (Caledon, ONT/Wellington Dukes (OJHL))
Jared Lockhurst took down nationally ranked #5 UMASS Boston Saturday night in the opening round of the 51st Codfish Bowl. Lockhurst tabbed a season-high 48 saves and held Boston scoreless on two power play opportunities including one midway third period with the game knotted at two. The senior held the Beacons to just two goals and held them scoreless for nearly 33 minutes of play in between goals.
