SUNYAC honors eight winter athletes with weekly awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its winter athletes of the week for the week ending January 10. Eight athletes were honored from five different institutions across five sports.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Lawrence Coleman (JR) Â
Oneonta, Forward (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/Hendrick Hudson)
Led Oneonta to a 3-0 record last week including a weekend sweep at Geneseo and Brockport. Scored 67 points for the week including a career high 33 points in a come-from-behind win against Brockport. He scored the final 14 points of the game versus Brockport during a 21-6 run that gave the Red Dragons the win.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Allison McKenna (SR) Â
Geneseo, Forward (Huntington, N.Y./John H. Glenn)
Senior forward Allison McKenna was the Knights' top scorer in all three games this past week. In Tuesday's 76-53 victory over visiting Fredonia, McKenna tallied 17 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and nine rebounds. McKenna scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Knights to a 53-39 win over Oneonta on Friday before notching 12 points and nine rebounds in a 62-57 setback to New Paltz on Saturday.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Jackie Bors (FR) Â
Cortland (Buffalo, N.Y./North Tonawanda)
Jackie Bors won both diving events in Cortland's home dual-meet loss to Hartwick Sunday. She scored 196.35 points on the 3-meter board and 180.60 points on the 1-meter board.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Chelsey Simon (SR) Â
Cortland (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida)
Chelsey Simon won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.97 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.90 during Cortland's home dual-meet loss to Hartwick Sunday. She also finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:35.61).
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Reeve Callen (SR) Â
Cortland (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego)
Reeve Callen took top honors in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.15) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.02) during Cortland's home dual-meet loss to Hartwick Sunday. He also swam the anchor freestyle leg on Cortland's winning 200-yard medley relay (1:37.83).
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Salkeld (SR) Â
Buffalo State (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland)
Ryan Salkeld netted a goal and an assist as Buffalo State knocked off No. 15 Utica, 3-1, on Saturday. The senior forward now has seven goals and three assists in 13 games this season.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Danny Liscio (FR) Â
Morrisville, Forward (Woodbridge, Ontario)
Freshman Danny Liscio led Morrisville State to a 7-5 victory over Becker College, posting his second collegiate hat trick of his career as he tallied three goals.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Drew Weigman (SO) Â
Cortland, Goaltender (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones)
Drew Weigman posted a pair of non-conference wins last week as Cortland evened its record at 6-6-3 on the season. In a 5-1 win versus Becker on Friday, Weigman turned aside 34 shots. He followed up with 30 saves in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory versus 12th-ranked Nichols on Saturday. For the two games, he posted a 2.00 GAA with 64 saves and a .941 save percentage.
