Geneseo Men Win Indoor Track and Field Championship
Seniors Lee Berube and Wenley Louis each won a pair of events to lead the Geneseo men's indoor track and field team to the team title at the SUNYAC Men's Indoor Track & Field championships today at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. The Blue Knights scored 152 points to finish ahead of Cortland (118) and Buffalo State (89). Geneseo captured their seventh men's team championship as the Blue Knights won titles in 2001, '02, '03, '05, '06 and 2010.
Berube won the 5,000 meters (15:14.04) and the 3,000 meters (8:27.76), both ECAC-qualifying times, while Louis won the long jump in a meet record and ECAC-qualifying distance of 7.24 meters and the triple jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 14.32 meters.
Senior Eddie Novara won the mile run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:18.50 and finished second in the 3,000 with a time of 8:40.97, while senior Chris Carter, who ran an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:54.22 to win the 800 meters. The Distance Medley Relay team of senior Mark Streb, senior Matt Hart, first year Ryan Moynihan and junior Tom Clark ran an ECAC-qualifying time of 10:31.39 as the Knights won the event for the third straight year.
Second place Cortland won three events. Junior Eric Banks took first in the 400 meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 49.82; marking the first time in 10 years that a Red Dragon won the event. Sophomore Brandon Loomis was also an individual winner as he claimed the high jump with a winning height of 1.93 meters. The 4x400 meter relay of Phill Wiltshire, Rob Schenke, Andrew Greenberg and Neil-Ryan Yodice won an exciting race in a time of 3:24.08, edging out Oneonta by .01 seconds.
Oneonta junior Sean Bernstein won a pair of SUNYAC titles after entered the meet as the top seed in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes. He posted the fastest times in both events including a meet record in the 200. He won the 60 in a time of 6.92 while he crossed the line in the 200 in a time of 21.67. His time in the 200 broke the meet record set last year by Justin Allen of Buffalo State, who ran a time of 21.76. Bernstein was also the lead leg for the 4x400-meter relay that missed a SUNYAC title by .01 seconds to Cortland.
The College at Brockport won three events on the day led by senior Dustin Colgan who was a double-winner. Colgan won the weight throw but almost a full meter ahead of the runner up with a toss of 16.08 meters and then won the shot put with a throw of 15.53 meters. This marks the fourth time a Golden Eagle has swept the throwing events. Junior Zach Ferrara won the pole vault with a new meet and conference record height of 5.00 meters. Cortland’s Ryan Pericozzi also cleared five meters, however Ferrara won on a tie-breaker of attempts. Ferrara’s win snaps a nine year streak of a Cortland Red Dragon winning the event.
Oswego’s Da’Quan Coleman was crowned the conference champion in the 60-meter hurdles. Coleman crossed the finish line in the 60-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 8.50 seconds to become the first Oswego State male track and field athlete to win the event. He is also the first Laker male take top indoor honors since Shomari Felder won the high jump in 2006.
