Cortland Men Edge Geneseo for SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Title
ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland men's track and field team earned its 11th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) outdoor title and first since 2008 at the championship meet hosted by SUNY Oneonta.
Cortland finished with 171.5 points to edge Geneseo, which placed second with 156.5 points. The remainder of the field included Oneonta (139), Brockport (110), Fredonia (76), Buffalo St. (75), Plattsburgh (51) and Oswego (33).
Four Red Dragons individuals earned SUNYAC crowns in addition to one relay team. Sophomore Cody Amengualwon the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:17.66 and senior Tomas Velasquez was the long jump champion at 7.26 meters (23' 10”). Senior Will Razzano captured the triple jump at 14.24 meters (46' 8.75”) and junior Justin Torres won the shot put at 15.07 meters (49' 5.5”). The 4x400-meter relay team of junior Eric Banks, senior Phill Wiltshire, freshman Neil Yodice and sophomore Stephan Linton set meet and facility records with their winning time of 3:15.23.
Senior Eddie Novara won a pair of events to lead the Geneseo men's outdoor track and field team. Novara won the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:50.38 and captured the 1,500 meters in 3:58.10. Geneseo scored most of their points in the distance events as senior Lee Berube won the 5,000 meters in a SUNYAC meet record time of 14:43.44 and finished third in the 10,000 meters in 32:08.05. Junior Chris Mateer finished second in the 10K in 32:06.21 and was third in the 5K in 15:19.82, while junior Alex Brimstein was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:17.84 and second in the 5K in 15:09.94. Senior Colin Keenan won the high jump with a height of 1.93 meters, while senior Wenley Louis was second in the long jump in 7.12 meters and second in the triple jump in 14.16 meters.
The Oneonta men took home five individual and one relay conference crown. Leading the way was seniors Jesse Dobson and Sean Wren, junior Sean Bernstein and freshman Rob Farrell. Bernstein won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes and made it look easy in doing so. In winning the 200, he set an Oneonta facility record of 21.26. Farrell set a school record in winning the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.32 seconds. He also ran a personal best time of 54.37 to earn a medal in the 400-meter hurdles. Wren ran the race of his career in winning the 400 hurdles. He ran a time of 52.68, which shattered his own school record in the event of 54.00 seconds. His time was also a SUNYAC meet and Oneonta facility record. Dobson ran a personal best time of 48.58 in winning the 400-meter run. Bernstein, Farrell and Dobson were three of the four legs on the SUNYAC champion 4x100-meter relay.
Brockport won two throwing events as Dustin Colgan came in first in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 50.10 meters and Darius Favors won the discus with a winning throw of 47.29 meters.
Senior Tim Fargino captured his first SUNYAC Championship, winning the 800-meter run (1:54.39) to lead the Bengals' this weekend at the outdoor conference championships
