Cortland Women's Lax to Host Keuka in NCAA First Round Game Wednesday, May 8
The SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team will host Keuka College in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round game on Wednesday, May 8, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time has been announced as 3 p.m. by the NCAA. Cortland enters the game with a 18-1 record and Keuka is 12-3.
The winner will play in a four-team regional on Saturday-Sunday, May 11-12, and will face either Kenyon (13-2) or Adrian (16-2) in the second round. Those schools play a first-round game Wednesday at Adrian. Other first-round matchups in Cortland’s portion of the bracket are Bowdoin (13-3) hosting Bridgewater State (17-2) and Susquehanna (17-0) hosting Geneseo (12-5).
The site of the four-team May 11-12 regional will be announced after the first round is completed. The Division III national semifinals and finals will be held May 18-19 at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.
Under fifth-year head coach Kathy Taylor, the Red Dragons earned a playoff berth after capturing their 15th straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title. Cortland won the league crown with a 12-5 win versus Geneseo in last Saturday’s championship game. The Red Dragons will be making their 15th straight NCAA appearance and 17th overall.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the Division III “final four” for the second straight year with wins over Castleton State, 22-6, Mary Washington, 12-5, and The College of New Jersey, 9-7, before losing to eventual national champion Trinity College (Conn.) in the semifinals, 7-5. In 2011, Cortland also lost to the eventual national champion, Gettysburg, in the national semifinals, 13-11.
Cortland has played in at least the NCAA second round each of the last 14 years, including “final four” showings in 2012, 2011 and 2006 and quarterfinal appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
