Jessica Lavelle Named IWLCA Div. III National Defender of the Year
SUNY Cortland junior defender Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) has been chosen as the 2013 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Div. III National Defender of the Year.
Lavelle played in 23 games, 22 as a starter. She led the Red Dragons with 68 ground balls and 58 caused turnovers. She ranked 15th nationally in Div. III with 2.5 caused turnovers per game. Lavelle’s play helped Cortland rank ninth nationally in scoring defense at 6.9 goals allowed per game.
Lavelle was a first-team All-America, All-Empire Region and All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selection this spring. She was also the first defender to be named the SUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player in the 17-year history of the event.
In Cortland’s 14-4 win over Bowdoin in the NCAA quarterfinals, Lavelle recorded three caused turnovers and three ground balls while holding the Polar Bears’ top scorer to one goal.
Cortland finished the season 21-2 and advanced to the NCAA Div. III “final four” for the third straight year. The Red Dragons lost to Trinity (Conn.) in the national semifinals. Cortland also won its 15th straight SUNYAC title and made its 15th consecutive NCAA Div. III Tournament showing.
