Cortland Advances to NCAA Div. III Quarters with 21-3 Win vs. Adrian
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) scored a game-high nine points on three goals and six assists to lead the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 21-3 win versus Adrian College Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
The Red Dragons won their 17th straight game to improve to 20-1 on the season and will host Bowdoin, a 10-6 winne rversus Geneseo, at 1 p.m. on Sunday in a national quarterfinal game. The Bulldogs completed their season with a 17-3 record.
Senior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) had three goals and two assists, and sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) also netted three goals for Cortland. Junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) contributed two goals and one assist, freshman Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored twice, freshman Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) chipped in with one goal and one assist and seven others added one goal each.
Senior goalie Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made two saves in 50:44 before giving way to freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's), who stopped one shot over the final 9:16. Senior Jamie Flood (East Islip) recorded four ground balls and four caused turnovers and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) registered six draw controls.
Senior Olivia Duncan (Orangeville, ON/Orangeville Secondary) paced the Bulldogs with one goal and one assist. Senior Heather Newblom (Holland, OH/St. Ursula Academy) and junior Hannah Early (Shelburne, ON/Centre Dufferin) each netted a goal and senior Stacey Birlson (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) contributed an assist. Freshman goalie Maddie McDonald (Whitby, ON/Austin Catholic) stopped six shots. Early recorded six draw controls.
Cortland quickly took control of the game, building an 8-0 lead just 10:50 into the contest. Geremia recorded two goals and three assists and Di Fato scored twice during the run. Newblom put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at 18:22, but the Red Dragons tallied five consecutive scores from five different players for a 13-1 lead. Early closed the half with a goal for Adrian 27 seconds before intermission to make it a 13-2 game.
The Red Dragons eventually pushed their lead to 21-2 with the first nine goals of the second half as Cortland emptied its bench. Duncan capped the game's scoring with a goal 22 seconds before the final horn.
